We have been to Boca Paila Fishing Lodge about 4 times prior to this for day fishing, however this was our first time to spend the night there. It is for flats fishing, bonefish, permit, snook, and tarpon. Some there did a grand slam while we were there. My husband caught 9 bonefish in 2 days flyfishing, and had a monster permit on but it got off. He loved it. I went with him on the guided boat as an observer and enjoyed the pretty birds, and even saw an alligator. The beach is totally vacant except for the guests at the lodge, I think the lodge will accomodate about 20 at a time. I was the only lady until another wife showed up on our third day. Wonderful homemade limeaid. Good bar and wine. The road is not paved past the Sain Kaan Reserve, but a crew was working on the road to start paving more sections of it soon. We have always made it there in a compact rental car, so 4 wheel drive is not a definite requirement. It is a good dirt road, some pot holes , but not a bad road. One day after fishing, we drove on down to Punta Allen for a little beer ride to explore, it is 35 kilometers away and took an hour and ahalf to get there, but only less than an hour to drive back to the lodge because after a few beers, you don't mind going a little faster on the bumpy dirt road. It was fun to explore. Not much is at Punta Allen. A Boca Paila Fishing Lodge t-shirt is something recognized around the world among sport fishermen, be sure to buy plenty of them as well as the caps to wear when you take your photos holding the fish. We had best luck using the flies that were sold there. The guides pole the flats boats while you fish and speak very good English. Many fishermen come to this place as well as take separate trips to Casa Blanca for this type of fishing in Mexico.

Just got back from a wonderful week in Boca Paila. The food was wonderful and fishing was great. I had four days running to get a Grand Slam and one day at a Super Grand Slam. Mario was a wonderful guide. This was second year to go and this year was better than last year. It was worth every cent and I will go back next year. Kudo's to Texas CCA and Frontiers Travel for making this trip possible. Make sure that you fish the boca in the late afternoon for the tarpon and snook. By the way caught a 25lb. plus snook at the boca on a purple mirror lure.... nothing but fun and a good time at the Boca Paila fishing Lodge...

My friend and I we attending a wedding at Tulum and decided we would try to go fishing for bone fish. We drove the rough road to the lodge, in a rental van, and just showed up without a reservation. They said they could take us out after lunch, which was excellent. Our guide taught us the fine points of this style of fly fishing and we both caught fish. It was a great experience and the staff was unexpectedly flexible and helpful.

“Permit Heaven”

Traveled to Boca Paila this past April. Idylic, 20-person lodge (very comfortable rooms with AC, but not deluxe; great food) located on pristine, deserted beach far far away from the crowds of Cancun. No other lodges or hotels w/in a mile in either directrion. Have been to Bahamas 4 times fly fishing for bonefish, but never Yucatan. Caught several dozen 2-pound bonefish and caught my first (two) permit on the fly. Never saw so many permit in my life!! Jumped a tarpon and caught 3 snook. Re-booked for next May.

“Not for the fishing!”

Advertised as "the place" for the Grand Slam of fly-fishing - Can't be true. As an experience salt water fisherman with 15 years on the flats, I focused on Permit and Tarpon. Saw one Tarpon, lots of Permit and tons of TINY Bones. Caught no Permit or Tarpon.....our experienced group of six anglers fishing 4 full sunny days caught zero Permit or Tarpon.
Don't go with even the faintest hope for the grand slam. You too will be dissapointed. Also, area not safe outside camp at night.
