This is a lovely, relaxing spot to completely chill out and get away from everything. We stayed in cabana 12 "deluxe unit". This cabana faces the ocean, but sits back off the road a bit. We found the road a bit of a detraction as there was a lot of traffic on the road during our stay (much of it likely post-Wilma related as we noted lots of sand trucks and trucks in general, but also lots of taxis and passenger cars). There were times when we had to stand and wait to cross the road because the road was so busy. Also, the deluxe units have a large front "yard" and a fence which, although allows for privacy from peering eyes of passengers in cars, does obstruct a bit of the beautiful view (see my photos) and makes you feel a little separated from things. Overall, however, we found this to be a really nice place to stay. We were happy with our cabana overall - it was very attractive and cleaned well and had a great front porch with hammocks to relax on. A couple detractions (and some of these have been mentioned already)...the shower pressure is VERY light, in fact so light that it is hard to rinse the soap and shampoo off well. And it's salt water, so you never really feel clean...you always have a residue of salt on your skin and hair. The water temp varies in the shower. Some days you get warm/hot water, other days you don't. The toilet sometimes does not flush - I'd say about 20% of the time it doesn't flush. You have to wait awhile and then try again. Our ceiling fan was not working during our stay, although since it was December, it was cool enough at night without it (but if you plan to come during the hot season - May through November -you may want to check ahead to make sure you'll have that fan working because you will need it!) The staff was friendly, courteous and professional. The BEST thing about Zamas is its restaurant, Que Fresco! WOW! The food was fantastic - especially dinners, and particularly their fish dishes. There were several dinners that were so fantastic, I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. We live in a major metropolitan area that is known for great restaurants, but Que Fresco outshined anything we have eaten at home. The best things we ate there were "crispy fish", "fish tacos" and "garlic & lime fish". Prices are moderate. Most our our breakfasts (including tip) came to about $20 - $25 for two people (included 2 entrees, 3 cups of coffee, sometimes a fruit plate or juice). Our dinner checks (including tip) ran around $45 - $50 for 2 people. We almost always ordered 1 appetizer to share, an entree each, 2-3 cocktails between us, 1 or 2 desserts and coffee. Breakfast entrees average about US $5.50 a piece. Dinner entrees vary, ranging from about $8.00 or $9.00 for pizza or pasta, to $18.00 for the most expensive seafood dishes. Most alcoholic beverages are $4.00. Some really fancy drinks are $6.00. Coffee, and other non-alcoholic beverages are $2.00 each. Be careful when ordering "specials" at dinner. I ordered the soup special and when the bill came, the soup was $9.00 (for one small bowl)! Make sure you ask what the price is before you order.
A couple other things to mention. It is incredibly easy to hail taxis near Zamas. Right down the road, there are taxis sitting all hours of the day and night waiting for passengers. You can go anywhere locally (for example Tulum Pueblo or down the road to another beach or resort) for about $3.00. The beach at Zamas is pretty, but not good for swimming (it's too rocky). We discovered a WONDERFUL and beautiful swimming beach with a beach bar, called El Paraiso. It's about 1.5 miles down the road from Zamas (heading toward the ruins) and we took a taxi there almost every day and spent our beach days there. The beach bar there serves good food and drinks and there is also a bathroom. El Paraiso is the picture-perfect Caribbean beach - picture the Corona beer commercials and you get the picture. I'll include a photo so you can see how beautiful it is.
