After a year of intense work, I don't know how we would be feeling today if we hadn't visited Azulik. We got there exhausted an experienced a complete turn around. What we enjoyed the most was staying at one 100% ecological place, without electricity, because it helped us reconnect with nature. We felt the pleasure of being together without anyone bothering us, with a sincere and warm assistance. We ate healthy, slept listening to the sea breeze; we went under Spa treatments… massages by the seashore: ASTONISHING. We read, rested… It was a real trip, with all what it means. Being in the middle of the "jungle" is something you don't imagine until you are there. We are already planning our coming back .

We stayed at Azulik for our honeymoon and it was the best choice we ever made. I 100% recommend it if you are the right type of person. The bed wasn't the most comfortable and we only had hot water half of the time. Plus we were visited by several animals. By the way, no food in the room should be taken VERY SERIOUSLY. Some strange possum rat (we named it Rudy) climbed on my wife while we were eating in the room our first night. Iguanas will also come for a look on the porch. While out in the ocean, I looked back and saw a naked couple jumping up and down while flipping a towel at something. I'm guessing it was Tico, the king of the iguanas saying "Hi." It was the funniest thing I've ever witnessed. You need to relax and enjoy yourself and laugh off any things that go wrong. Most of the people speak excellent English and those that aren't fluent still speak better English than I speak Spanish and since it's Mexico, don't gripe about it. Don't get all stressed out because the employees don't need your attitude and hassle. They're too nice and deserve better. If you want romance go to Azulik. We didn't even bother going to any ruins or tourist things, because Azulik was the only place I wanted to be at.

Azulik is beautiful.... My good friend and his girlfriend stayed there twice and recommended the property, but advised that it was slightly rustic.
The setting really is magnificent. All of the 15 bungalows are situated on a cliff and the adjoining beaches are private and pristine.
Rooms are true to the definition of "eco travel" with no electricity and with slight exposure to the elements. Regardless, they supply you with plenty of candles which cast a lovely glow against the natural teak wood facade and the ocean breeze just sweeps through the casita and is heavenly. It lulls you to sleep, which is good because the property, which is considered high-end (but NOT luxury), is likely to disappoint discerning travelers because of the the HARD mattresses, rough low-thread count linens, inexpensive blankets and non-absorbent towels.
The place would be perfect if they were to upgrade to European style feather bedding and finer quality linens.
While staying at Azulik you have access to the Maya Spa and are serviced by the restaurant at Cabanas Copal. Service was relaxed, as in not fast or efficient, but after a day you begin to go with the flow. Incidentally, the food is only average.
If you stay there bring a flashlight (its tough getting dressed for dinner in the dark) and some sheets from home.
Definitely try one of the local Mayn treatments at the spa in particular the sweat lodge and the honey massage.
I was extraordinarily relaxed after my stay...

Where to begin...well after reading the many mixed reviews I was scared. But after the first night I couldn't believe I second guessed Azulik. We had no issues with the staff; Miguel was great as well as the rest of staff. Our rooms were clean and the grounds were tidy. You always saw workers running around and keeping the place moving along.

I admit this place is not for everybody. They are not kidding when they say RUSTIC! But I couldn't imagine it any other way. I have never in my life felt so connected to the earth. I was truly in rhythm with the sea, the sun and the wind. I was in sensory overload the whole time...so many sounds, colors, smells and textures.

The cost seems high, but if you consider the real estate it is actually fairly priced. They could have easily added hundreds of rooms and charged a little less. But you are paying to stay in your own hut with no above you or below you. I never in my wildest dreams ever thought I would be so close to paradise.

Positives: Location, View, People, Ambience, Room, Deck, Swinging Beds, Eco, Private, Wildlife, Warm Sea, Beach, Services

Negatives: Food, mosquitoes (I had a lot of bites, but my husband only had a few, they just thought I was tasty :)) and a hard bed.

Highlights: Morning Swims, Iguanas, Mayan Culture, Swinging Bed, Rhythm of Nature, Spa, Sweat Lodge, Mayan Ruins

Journal Excerpt:
We arrived past sun down and trekked through the jungle on a raised foot bridge to our room. Once we ascended to the top of the stairs, we could hear the Caribbean swaying ever so gently against the rocks below. The room was then lit by candles to illuminate the earthy oasis which included a hanging bed with crisp white sheets and another larger bed draped in delicate white netting. Rich and newly waxed floors gleamed to show every beautiful distinction of grain. Soon we were left alone to inhale this magical moment. Sitting on a deck swing gazing at the night sky, the stars were the brightest I have ever seen...so close I could reach up and grab one for myself. My first morning was lit by the rising sun. It was invigorating; soft and serene. By 7:30 the sun was hot and energizing. As I walked out on the porch being blown away by the colors I was greeted by my new found pets away from home, The IGUANAS! The sea was so calm that morning we had to venture into the sea. The water was so warm; the sand was so soft almost like powder. The colors could not be matched by the best photograph or painting. It is something only the mind's eye can grasp. Our days were spent enveloping this new world, this dream land.

“Perfect Relaxation”

My wife and I stayed 5 nights in cabana #6 at Azulik, and it was the perfect relaxing getaway! We could have stayed our entire vacation in the cabana and been perfectly happy, but we also spent a day at the Tulum Ruins and a day at Xel-Ha (an eco-park), and I would highly recommend both experiences.

At Azulik we noticed couples that were completely comfortable being naked on their decks, and a few couples that didn't want to shed it all. (The cabana decks are rather close.) We've never been naked in front of other people other than in a locker room back home, but my wife and I both ventured onto our deck without any clothing, and loved the experience of having the sun warm our bodies. We spent each morning soaking in the tub at the end of the deck as the sun rose over the ocean, and when the sun warmed things up enough, we'd move to the outdoor swinging bed to tan naked for the rest of the morning. I now really think that to get the best of the Azulik experience, you really have to try laying out naked on the swinging bed in the late morning. WONDERFUL!!!

Also, we had great service from the staff! I was worried about arriving there late our first night (it was about midnight), but they met us at the car with a flashlight and helped us with our bags. We had told them we'd be there around 10:30 p.m., but our plane ran late.

Being in cabana 6 also probably helped with our flag service. Each time we put out our flag to request service, we had someone there within minutes. The staff has to pass #6 whenever they're going to or from the front desk to the cabanas. We had food catered to our cabana several times, and especially liked the Mexican breakfast.

The best part was going to bed early after dark and getting up early with the sunrise. No lights and no clocks or alarms. No particular schedule full of things to do. Azulik is the perfect place to get away and relax.
