After reading reviews here, I felt prepared to enjoy Azulik; I took a sheet for the outdoor bed, figuring I would be fine with the 'rough sheets' as I have had low thread count sheets many a time; I also took bug spray (didn't need it at all) and steeled myself for the worst.
My first impressions were quite favorable. We booked the 'Romance Villa', #1, paying a bit extra for more privacy. It was exactly like visiting the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse--fullfilling a long-forgotten fantasy from childhood. I loved how rustic, quiet, glowy (with the candles) and charming it was. The waves rolling in on the beach made a great ambient noise, and the view was exquisite--far more intimate and beautiful than I had seen on previous trips to this area (including some very expensive small luxury hotels).
It was unpretentious and relaxing. The following morning, we set out to figure out where we would spend time on the beach--the Copal side or the other side. Since Copal had palapas, we chose that side. Decent beach, lots of rocks and more nude people than I saw in art school, but relaxing and what we needed all the same. Nudity doesn't bother me, so it was no issue--just an amusing observation.
We enjoyed the freedom of being able to try different places to eat along the beach, and Azulik, Copal and Zahra are now connected so you can have a tab at each restaurant and charge to your room. Very convenient, especially at the snack bar of Copal. We enjoyed thoroughly a bucket of 4 beers with lime every afternoon as we watched the day go by. Great guacamole as well!
I had a lovely chocolate exfoliation treatment at the Maya Spa and we generally had a great time unwinding and being together.
Then the little things just started to get to us.
First thing: our cabana had very large wood-boring insects who delighted in chowing down every morning at dawn, so we were awakened by the incessant 'tick-tick-ticking' noise they made as they chewed the logs of the cabana. They left piles of sawdust on the floor, so we never slept without the mosquito net, even though there were no bugs. They also fall out of their holes occasionally, so I saw 4 of these beige cockroach-looking bugs (not scary, but I didn't much fancy the idea of one falling on me at night, nor the idea of sawdust in my bed). After the first 2 nights, the ticking noise was just plain annoying, keeping us from sleeping past dawn. A few more months of that and the Romance Villa will be in ruins, I'm afraid.
Second thing: We paid extra for the Romance Villa. We felt very secluded, so were nude a lot. Imagine my shock to see workers using our deck as a pass-through to Copal! Twice! The first time, I was nude and standing in the tub bathing, they looked right in (men)!!! We thought it a fluke, so didn't say anything, then the maids did the same thing WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS SITTING ON THE DECK. Unacceptable, especially when we paid the premium for the privilege of having the seclusion. We mentioned it casually to the front desk and they talked to the staff. They passed through on the OTHER side right next to the windows having a great view the next day of me nude on the swinging bed.
And no reimbursement or real apology. Not cool.
Third thing: The bed. Azulik management--hear me on this. I first dismissed the hard bed and really rough sheets as something you simply find in a hotel in Mexico that is less than $500 a night. My visit to our second destination, which was HALF the price we paid for Azulik, had wonderful linens and softer beds. It's not a price thing, it's a lack of thought. Your guests spend roughly half their stay in those beds--spend some money to get decent sheets and at LEAST mattress toppers to offer guests who sleep on their sides! My shoulders were killing me by night 4 (when I got no sleep at all due to the aches of sleeping on such a hard bed), and night 2 was the limit on the sheets, especially when you have the inevitable missed spot with the sunscreen. Those sheets are like sandpaper to burned skin.
Fourth thing: The candles. They were so dim! Azulik should offer at least one hurricane lamp so you can function in something other than sex mode. The candles were so low and dim, even crowding 6 together wasn't enough to read by. We had a lantern and reading light, thankfully, but we couldn't even really see our food the night we ordered in (and the flag system didn't work at night so I ordered at the front desk after my husband severely stubbed his big toe on one of the many sand-colored rocks in the pathways).
So like another reviewer said--it's like a death from a thousand cuts. No one thing sent us over the edge--it was all the little things that got to us over the days we were there.
Yes, Azulik is relaxing at first. Yes, I really enjoyed things like the swinging beds, large deck, outdoor tub, etc. Yes, they listened to reviews here and have books available in the rooms to read during your stay. But go here if you love hard beds (I know many actually do), don't mind really rough sheets, b/c they obviously aren't taking those complaints seriously.
And take a beach towel--I didn't realize I needed to and they only give you two towels. We got around this by taking them to the beach while they cleaned and they gave us two more--why not simply offer four from the get-go?
I was pretty disappointed with Azulik. I wanted so much to love it there! Unfortunately, unless they do something about those horrid beds, we will not be back.
