“BEWARE - Steer clear of Amansala”

BEWARE – STAY AWAY FROM AMANSALA! I just returned from a week there and it was a very unpleasant experience. I have traveled all over the world and have never been motivated to write a bad review of anyplace before this – yet, here I am to help future travels steer clear of this place. Amansala is label a friendly eco-resort but there is nothing friendly or environmentally sensitive about it. Do not buy the hype. Above that my two main complaints are the extremely unfriendly staff and owner and the FOOD POISINING they gave us. That kitchen serves up bacteria ridden poison. Everyone that ate there became sick on the way home. The worst part of the whole experience was the owner Melissa. Guests are paying San Francisco prices for her thatch tiki huts and she was rude and unaccommodating at every turn. My advice is to head a few hotels down the beach to Ocho Tulum or Suinos – both have good food and helpful staff.

i went to amansala with a friend hoping to get a kick start on a more healthy lifestyle. i really had no idea what it was about except that there would be exercise involved!! well i had that right, i really enjoyed the experience. we woke every morning to a beach walk then some yoga which i had never done before and actually thought it was quite a good work out! we had many guest instructors for aftrican dance, belly dance, ect that really helped to keep things interesting and if you like fresh fish you will love the food! here are a few things i didn't care for.... the bike rides, although to wonderful places the bikes for lack of a better word, suck! i rode 7 miles on flat tires till i could not keep up and then when an instructor was forced to stay behind with me, then and only then did i get shown where i could get some air in my tires. the second bike ride, 7 miles was wonderful with air in the tires but i decided to come home for some quite time by myself while the rest of the group kayaked, well first the kick stand fell of, then the fender fell off, then the chain broke and i had to walk 7 miles home in the very hot sun, because the guy driving the support truck didn't tell anyone that he found a broken down bike along the rode that he knew belonged to amansala for almost an hour. i know some of this sounds bad but i really did enjoy the exjperience but here are some tips if you go, don't pack light and think you are going to wash things out in the sink, the shower and sink are salt water, bring extra conditoner again the shower is salt water. phone service is not allway great there so bring a travel clock if you are like me and need to know what time it is, oh and be ready to sweat alot!!

Although Amansala is very charming in decor, the owner, Melissa is one of the most lifeless women I have encountered. Odd since she is running a place with yoga and such. After being reassigned to Amansala after Casa Magna was seized by the rightful property owners (a story within itself!), you would think she would have been as accommodating as possible. Wrong. Our reservation went from a suite at CasaMagna (2 queen beds and 1 king) to 3 double beds at Amansala. Did we get a lower rate? No. Even though Casa Magna is supposedly much nicer and we should have had more room to move. And things that had been previously promised were suddenly being re-negotiated. We were also shuffled into another room after 2 nights. And we were all very accommodating to her needs but she wasn't flexible, or pleasant, or kind or gracious. I loved Tulum, but will never return to her establishments. There are too many warm and wonderful options right next door- Suenos is run by an amazing and warm couple. Also, they have locks on the doors and safe's in the rooms. Om and Ocho were also run by friendly, warm people and had much better food. There are so many options to choose from, please don't make the mistake of staying at Amansala or Casa Magna or anywhere else run by this woman. She lacks light in a place brimming with sun and magic. There is definitely something amiss with that. Happy journey!

I attended bikini bootcamp last spring (2007) and I had a wonderful experience. I didn't think to write a review at the time, but I came to tripadvisor with thoughts of attending again, and I wanted to share how awesome the week was for me and my friends!
I visited in March and during my stay I slept nine sound hours a night, got amazing work outs, loved the fresh food, loved the excursions, thought the beach was gorgeous, loved the massages, cherished the morning walks, and came home with a renewed desire to be more aware of nutrition, yoga, and ugh... Abs.
I am in my early 30's and attended as part of a bachelorette party. If I could afford to do this once a year I would do it in a heartbeat... My husband said that I glowed for a month upon my return!

Thanks for everything!
