First of all, Tulum is in Quitana Roo, NOT the Yucatan. Its south of Cancun. I opted to rent a car and drive the 2.5 hours from the airport myself, instead of taking a shuttle. Car rental in Mexico is very cheap, so why not. Just in case I wanted to stop alongside the road, or Cozumel or Del Carmen, I could do that. Also, you are 2-3 hours from Belize, so thats another option.
I arrived just before dark, much to my relief. I traveled solo, and had never been to Tulum. The road to Amansala is long and dark at night, passing much jungle.
The resort was everything Id imagined it would be from the presentation on the website. A little paradise. LOVED the huts and villas. LOVED the adobe architecture and layout of the entire property. Just beautiful. Serene, looks like a zen master designed it. haha It's the antithesis of your all-inclusive resorts (yuck) or touristy chain hotels. The water is so clean and clear. When you swim in the ocean, the view of the beach is beyond words. The beach stroll is beyond words.
I did not arrive for the bikini boot camp, so there was no bellydancing, african dance, or yoga. That was disappointing. I was told a masseuse can be called in. The food was healthy and amazing. My only letdown had absolutely nothing to do with the resort, rather the unfriendy and bad auras of some of the other guests. Its a very intimate setting and you eat breakfast and dinner with the other guests. I just thought having come THAT far from home, to a place like THIS, that everyone's spirit would be open to everyone else, and there would be nothing but good energy. Then I woke up. Some sat down right in front of me and turn away. Not everyone, just some. It was just....weird, at times. So some time was spent trying to avoid the bad energy. In a place like that!!!
Tulum itself is very trashy. The road to Amansala in particular was an obvious dumping ground. There are no residential homes, so people or businesses purposely dump along the road where all these eco-chic places do business? I dont get it. So as I road bicycles, it literally smelled like hot garbage.
BRING INSECT REPELLANT. Good Lord, I didnt and I had to use what they had which was better than nothing. Ive never been to a jungle-ous area before, and didnt realize that Tulum was until I got there. The skeets were merciless.
Im not sure if I would return, its kind of a "been there, done that" thing. There are many resorts on the same road, much like Amansala. Not sure if theyre' better or worse, but Id like to find out.
Id rather not say when I stayed, in order to maintain anonymity. It wasnt January though.
