My girlfriend and I visited Mexico and Tulum for the very first time in late August 2005. At first, we wanted to try staying in one of the low-key cabanas but we were a bit worried as to how hot it would get. As it was our first visit to Mexico we didn’t know if the heat and humidity would be too much for us at night. So, we made the following plan, we booked two nights at Posada Luna Del Sur, then two nights at La Conchita (and then, actually, we left a 5th night unbooked to play it by ear).
Well, Posada Luna Del Sur was a real gem. As a matter of fact we ended up going back to Luna Del Sur for our 5th night! The hotel is located at the end of the main road in Tulum, just a 5-minute walk to the bus depot of Tulum. Janet, the hotel owner, is very friendly and will give you plenty of information if you are not familiar with the area. We stayed in room #5 (on the ground floor) for our first two nights, and in room #6 (on the first floor -- or, second floor if you are an American) for our last night. Both rooms were very spacious and bright and with comfortable king size beds, and clean. They have an air-conditioner and two ceiling fans (one above the bed) so you can control the airflow. (The air-conditioner is located high up so it is either on or off (you can’t really control its knobs.)
In order to get around we had rented a car for a couple of days but for the other days we would walk over to the taxi stand and grab a taxi to get to the beach (around US$3.50 for the beach at Paraiso, for example).
Crisante, the maid at Luna Del Sur, is very-very sweet and she does a great job cleaning every day.
At night, the hotel is nice and quiet.
Overall, Luna Del Sur is a fantastic deal.
