We read the numerous glowing reviews of this place, and booked. When we arrived, we immediately knew it was not for us. But we are not everyone, this hotel may please plenty of people, just didn't do it for us.
Let me start with the positive points. It was extremely clean and safe, had good water pressure, a/c, fridge, tv, small patio outdoor area for each room and a carpark. It was good value, considering these amenities for $60 a night. It is a very short 5 to 10 min walk into the main drag of Tulum - so convenient in the evenings, for dinner/going out, etc. Though, it is basically located near what looks like a truckstop rest area/repair shop, on the edge of town. It is a 10 minute drive to the beach, so you need a car or taxi to reach the ocean.
We went to Tulum to experience the beach and environs to their fullest. So we checked out and moved to a cabana on the beach, at one of the tripadvisor recommendations. This was a little more expensive, sure, but a lot more pleasant and memorable, and still great value considering what we got for our money. And if time is more precious than saving a little money when on vacation, as with us, keep this in mind ... If you are wanting to hang in a hammock and listen to the ocean, walk out of your cabana and onto the beach, basically really chill out, then don't stay at Posada Luna del Sur. If you are concerned about having a tv, a/c, fridge and all these modern day amenities, then do stay at Posada Luna del Sur.
Tulum in general, has a very hip, rustic vibe - something we did not feel at all whilst at Luna del Sur.
We found the combination of staying on the beach in a quality cabana, allowed us to enjoy the beach environment to it's fullest. For eating out, we enjoyed the various beachfront restaurants, then took the short drive into Tulum itself for the odd change of scenery, shopping, laundry, banking, etc ...
