The rooms are beautiful. The property is beautiful. The beach is gorgeous although it can be very breezy with a rough ocean. There are plenty of beach chairs and palapas so it's not like one of those resorts where you need to have someone run down at 6:00 a.m. to cover chairs with towels and beach bags.
The service was not good. It sometimes takes forever to get someone to take an order, or even bring you a menu on the beach. No one understands simple requests like bringing drinks before or at least with the food, or bringing an appetizer before or at least with the main course.
The people who work there are lovely with the exception of the manager who is a liar. More on that later.
After our first breakfast we ate our breakfast elsewhere even though it was included. It was so unenjoyable between the food and the awful coffee, which I believe was instant.
aWe were also surprised at the limited selection of beer and that they had no beer in bottles, only cans. We aren't beer drinkers except we love Modelo Negro or foreign beers in a bottle. The cans taste different.
The hotel is overpriced for what you get, but, it is the only hotel with A.C. Because we found Tulum charming we looked into a few other places while we were there for a possible return trip but found they weren't much less and their accomodations were not as luxurious as Ana Y Jose.
If you do go to Tulum we recommend Posada Margherita for meals and also Tres Lunes, a coffee house for great coffee and breakfast. Both have great atmospheres.
We had planned to spend several nights at a different resort and after a few days at Ana Y Jose inquired about cutting our stay short by one day. We were getting tired of leaving for every meal and wanted a place where the food was good as were really had wanted a vacation where we plopped on the beach and didn['t have to go anywhere. We were told by an employee in the office that would be fine and confirmed with him through a lengthy conversation that we would be refunded one night of our stay and for the days of our car rental we weren't going to use.
When we went to finalize our bill after already paying for the extra night at the other resort the manager refused to honor his employees representation, was rude, nasty and condescending and lied to us. He refused to reimburse us.
Also, don't be fooled by the little espresso machine with the pods in the rooms. I have never been to a hotel that charges for coffee made in the room. We were charged for every espresso pod we used at the rate of $2.50:00, which is not only outrageous, but also unfair because the machine often doesn't work. It will take the pod but not make the coffee.
As much as I don't want Tulum to loose it's rustic charm by development it would be great if some of the other guest house got A.C.
