“We never wanted our honeymoon at Ana y Jose to end”

Ana y Jose Charming Hotel and Spa

My wife (before she was my wife) informed me that I would be in charge of making sure we had a great honeymoon. I looked all over Mexico and the Carib. and ultimately found AyJ through TripAdvisor. The reviews here are mostly positive, and described what I thought we were looking for. So I booked it! ... I was delighted to know after booking the trip that a gal I worked with stayed at AyJ in July of '07, and she had nothing but good things to say as well.
We booked by contacting the hotel directly, and Oscar was very helpful in answering all of my questions. We booked 5 days, which included breakfast, a rental car, and two spa treatments (gave them both to my wife). I was a little apprehensive about driving, but it turned out to be no issue at all (just watch out for the topes ... the evil highway dream of an ancient and malignant Mayan diety). The car was waiting for us at the airport in Cancun, and Tulum and AyJ was only a short drive south down the main coastal highway.
We arrived on June 30th and our room wasn't ready quite yet, but our bags were taken and we were escorted to the restaurant so we could finally eat and relax a bit. The wait staff ... all of the staff ... were very friendly and helpful the entire time we were guests. The food can be a little pricey, but it was all very good. And there are places all up and down the beach that offer more affordable dining if you need it. (A small store up the beach road is nearby for supplies as well.)
We stayed in an oceanfront suite, called Amanecer (room 1 on the map on their website). We had a little issue with the hot water one day, but they were working on it and it wasn't really a problem after a few hours. The room is great for honeymooners, it is on the edge of the property and we felt we had enough privacy, despite the presence of other hotel guests walking about.
The beach ... it was by far the best thing about the entire trip, and that is saying something. There was nothing more relaxing than returning from the ruins or a cenote and jumping into the ocean, then sitting back under the shade with cerveza or a margarita and falling asleep to the sound of the waves. The beach was very quiet, everyone was friendly but basically kept to themselves, and there were no crowds to speak of. This was why we came here and avoided a larger resort or AI. We walked up and down the beach from AyJ, and we both felt they had the best stretch of sand to speak of. White sands and clear turquoise waves on a pristine beach. A note to folks with kids: there were a few topless sunbathers at the hotel. I don't know one way or another how common this is, but judging by how casual it all appeared, I just wanted to point this out. Again, everyone kept to themselves and no one seemed to mind the extra skin. On that point, if you have kids they should be well-behaved enough to know this is a place where people come to relax and not to be bothered by noisy brats. ... The few younger kids we encountered at AyJ were not a problem at all for us honeymooners.
We have no complaints about anything regarding service or setting or cleanliness or anything else. The only thing that we noted to AyJ in our comment card upon leaving was that one day during our stay there seemed to be too much detergent in the fresh laundry. I know that sounds weird, and we didn't nitpick and just rolled with it because we were having such a wonderful relaxing time. But we both had small reactions to the extra soap in the sheets and towels that day (July 3rd). We noticed the splotchy skin first, then tracked it to whenever we used our beach towels that day, and then when we were in the bed that evening. But by the next day the new laundry was "normal" again and we had no more reactions. Small thing, and we noted it in our comment card ... if someone from management wants to comment, I don't know if anyone else during our stay complained about the same, but we saw at least a few splotchy people on the beach that day.
We didn't want to leave! My wife and I wanted to stay and open up a small store that sells flip flops and sun tan lotion right on the beach. The logistics were overwhelming, and we decided just to come visit again next summer instead.

Our marriage took place at Ana y Jose Beach Club and it was beyond our expectations. Planning a wedding out of the country and over the internet can be intimidating and difficult. We chose Ana y Jose for our marriage after researching multiple properties in Tulum over the internet. We did not have a chance to see the property before the week we were there to get married.

If you have never been to Tulum you should know that it is absolutely magical! The Ana y Jose Hotel and Beach club had phenomenal service and accommodated our every needs. The day of the wedding all of the workers were punctual and professional during every step of preparation.

Our overall experience was exceptional, beautiful and amazing. We had 56 guests who all stated that they had the time of their lives and loved every moment of the wedding. We couldn't have chosen a better place to pledge our commitment to one another. We can't wait to return to Tulum and Ana y Jose. We will definitely be visiting frequently.

Thank you so much to Jackie and the entire staff at Ana y Jose Hotel and Beach Club. You all made our marriage an amazing and magical memory!

Many Blessing

- Bernie and Adi Tkaczyk

“Beach and Spa were awesome”

Ana y Jose Charming Hotel and Spa

24 Jun 2008

Per Janet and Jack's suggested (from Posada Luna Del Sol) we spent all of our time at the beach club.

The beach was clean, the servers attentive and the chairs plentiful.

We also had great massages by Carolina while we were there one day.

Looking forward to going back next year.

We traveled as two couples and stayed in high-end rooms, Deseo and Encantada ($335 a night). For the price, I feel we did not have a very good experience. For one, and I hope this doesn't sound petty, they didn't provide coffee for the room except in individual serving amounts similar to an espresso at $2.50 a cup. This is also true for the restaurant. No refills. I explained to them that I have spent over $2000 and it would be nice to have a gratis refill on my coffee. Further, the "mini bar" aka refrigerator in the room, had a sign on it that said if any beverage is moved from the fridge and put back THE ROOM WILL STILL BE CHARGED the cost as a computer system has been installed that keeps track of such things. This caused much consternation around the family (as well as laughter as I just couldn't believe it) for we had moved several drinks out of the refrigerator making room for our own soft drinks, yogurt, etc. After reading the guest book which stated we would not be charged except for items consumed and after going to the office and speaking with staff directly we were able to feel comfortable again with this matter. Still, I think this sign on the fridge shows the attitude and intent of the owners of Ana y Jose.
We had just left a resort in Cancun that provided gratis apples every morning at the concierge desk and free use of boogie boards to ride the waves out front. No so with Ana y Jose: $10 per person, per day for use of boogie boards.
Now that I've had my gripe, the rooms were clean and pleasant. Also, the ocean in front of the resort was wonderful - clean and warm. One should know that the wind is relentless on this part of the pennisula and that the ocean is rough - but great for boogie boards.
If you have your heart set on staying in this part of the Riviera Maya, I might suggest Maya Tulum, just yards from Ana Y Jose or check out Dreams, approx. a 1/4 mile from Ana Y Jose. We've stayed at Maya Tulum in the past and it is ideal for a vacationing couple (romantic). We ate there almost every night while staying at Ana Y Jose; they provide a very healthful, often vegetarian buffett each night at 7pm for $20 - yes, coffee with refills included. Adios, RJ.

Management Response

(Management representative)

Dear Guest: thank you for taking the time to write this review and letting us know your point of view.

I understand the way you feel and want to express our views as owners. The coffee we offer in all the suites is a high end quality coffee, the blend was costumed made especially for our hotel's guests and the price is displayed to avoid confusions. We used to serve regular coffee in our restaurant with a lower quality and we did offer refills before, since we upgraded the quality we do charge per cup.
I apologize if this was not explained upon your complaint at our hotel or restaurant.

About the minibar policy, we try to make it clear with the sing on the fridge that removing contents will imply a charge to your main bill, we have not found a better way to express this since most guests ignore this sign and want to use it for personal storage, the main issue here is that when wine and champagne bottles are removed from the mini bar they are useless about two hours after being in the heat, we can't refrigerate them again since they loose their temperature and quality. This is why we had to install this computer systems in our mini bars and clearly ask for these items not to be removed.

The boogie boards belong to a dive shop that offers their service through us, and they charge $10 us for a boogie board for the entire day.

I am glad to hear that aside from these matters you had a pleasant vacation and enjoyed your time in our hotel. Thank you very much for choosing us and for taking the time to write this review.

Sincerely,

Ana y Jose is a palapa style small hotel on the south end of Tulum.

We stayed there for one night in May in the upper floor of one of their private casas, which was a large bedroom suite with private patio, private pool and spacious bathroom. I think it was Casa #3. It can be rented with the first floor, which has a kitchen, bedroom and pull-out couch with another patio and outside seating. It was beautiful - decor was fantastic, woodwork gorgeous, clean, bright, spacious... really very nice.

They have a few of these houses on the resort as well as more traditional hotel-style rooms that face the beach and pool. The web site has a nice map and description of all of the rooms w/rates.

The resort is beautiful and peaceful. The grounds are well maintained and everyone we met was helpful and accommodating.

We ordered room service and also had breakfast, and all the food we had was wonderful. Their fish dishes were great and their quacamole was fantastic. Breakfast had American-style selections with Mexican twists and was very tasty and filling.

We enjoyed the fact that this is one of the few spots in Tulum where there was air conditioning AND satellite television, which was important to my husband who wanted to watch a hockey play-off game, and loved that he could watch it in bed on a flat panel TV.

Ana y Jose also had the extras you might not see elsewhere in Tulum, such as a stocked mini-bar, European coffee maker, robes/slippers and comfy bed w/fine linens.

We didn't spend much time on the beach since we were actually staying a ways up the beach a bit at the Mezzanine and needed a quiet room away from their Friday night Fiesta, but I can tell you that the beaches in Tulum are spectacular, particularly if you have some time to head south into the Biosphere, a nature preserve where there are secluded beaches with no one on them.

This resort is also known for it's spa services, though we didn't get to take advantage of them on this stay.

Next time around in Tulum I'll give Ana y Jose a shot - it's a nice blend of quiet eco-senstive hotel and modern convenience.
