My wife (before she was my wife) informed me that I would be in charge of making sure we had a great honeymoon. I looked all over Mexico and the Carib. and ultimately found AyJ through TripAdvisor. The reviews here are mostly positive, and described what I thought we were looking for. So I booked it! ... I was delighted to know after booking the trip that a gal I worked with stayed at AyJ in July of '07, and she had nothing but good things to say as well.
We booked by contacting the hotel directly, and Oscar was very helpful in answering all of my questions. We booked 5 days, which included breakfast, a rental car, and two spa treatments (gave them both to my wife). I was a little apprehensive about driving, but it turned out to be no issue at all (just watch out for the topes ... the evil highway dream of an ancient and malignant Mayan diety). The car was waiting for us at the airport in Cancun, and Tulum and AyJ was only a short drive south down the main coastal highway.
We arrived on June 30th and our room wasn't ready quite yet, but our bags were taken and we were escorted to the restaurant so we could finally eat and relax a bit. The wait staff ... all of the staff ... were very friendly and helpful the entire time we were guests. The food can be a little pricey, but it was all very good. And there are places all up and down the beach that offer more affordable dining if you need it. (A small store up the beach road is nearby for supplies as well.)
We stayed in an oceanfront suite, called Amanecer (room 1 on the map on their website). We had a little issue with the hot water one day, but they were working on it and it wasn't really a problem after a few hours. The room is great for honeymooners, it is on the edge of the property and we felt we had enough privacy, despite the presence of other hotel guests walking about.
The beach ... it was by far the best thing about the entire trip, and that is saying something. There was nothing more relaxing than returning from the ruins or a cenote and jumping into the ocean, then sitting back under the shade with cerveza or a margarita and falling asleep to the sound of the waves. The beach was very quiet, everyone was friendly but basically kept to themselves, and there were no crowds to speak of. This was why we came here and avoided a larger resort or AI. We walked up and down the beach from AyJ, and we both felt they had the best stretch of sand to speak of. White sands and clear turquoise waves on a pristine beach. A note to folks with kids: there were a few topless sunbathers at the hotel. I don't know one way or another how common this is, but judging by how casual it all appeared, I just wanted to point this out. Again, everyone kept to themselves and no one seemed to mind the extra skin. On that point, if you have kids they should be well-behaved enough to know this is a place where people come to relax and not to be bothered by noisy brats. ... The few younger kids we encountered at AyJ were not a problem at all for us honeymooners.
We have no complaints about anything regarding service or setting or cleanliness or anything else. The only thing that we noted to AyJ in our comment card upon leaving was that one day during our stay there seemed to be too much detergent in the fresh laundry. I know that sounds weird, and we didn't nitpick and just rolled with it because we were having such a wonderful relaxing time. But we both had small reactions to the extra soap in the sheets and towels that day (July 3rd). We noticed the splotchy skin first, then tracked it to whenever we used our beach towels that day, and then when we were in the bed that evening. But by the next day the new laundry was "normal" again and we had no more reactions. Small thing, and we noted it in our comment card ... if someone from management wants to comment, I don't know if anyone else during our stay complained about the same, but we saw at least a few splotchy people on the beach that day.
We didn't want to leave! My wife and I wanted to stay and open up a small store that sells flip flops and sun tan lotion right on the beach. The logistics were overwhelming, and we decided just to come visit again next summer instead.
