Juan & Martha were the quintessiantial definition of hospitable. They welcomed us upon our arrival, offered us a glass of wine or beer and shared wonderful stories. Their dog, Chili, welcomed our 18 year old daughter and kept her well entertained with cathcing coconuts, water shoes and sticks. They even shared a few meals together.

I wish we had more time to spend there. We spent the first few nights at Tita Tulum and although Tita has their own quaint restaurant, they were not friendly at all. Not friendly! Bit of a dissapointment The accomodations at Jade are rustic but very clean and what an incredible view. All the rooms have hammocks outside their front door and they provide coolers so you can store sodas, etc. Really breath taking view.

I do wish that they had a door on the bathroom. The only divider was a curtain which did not cover the entire entrance and anybody entering had a view of the bathroom. No problem for us but just a minor adjustment.

Having stayed at both Tita Tulum and Jade, we would highly recommend Jade!!!! They are two of the nicest hosts and coffee and toast with them and the other guests was wonderful. Met the nicest couple - they were interesting and we all laughed at stories, translations, and got great tips on what to do and most importantly what time to do them.

We really relied heavily on people's reviews and if you are too, don't hestitate to book your reservations at Jade.

The location is excellent. Tulum is fairly quiet and the beach in front of Jade is spectacular. We greatly enjoyed the layout of Jade and appreciated the retention of existing plants and trees. Placing the rooms on stilts really allows guests to experience the best of the beach (views and breeze) and environment of the jungle. Juan and Martha are very hospitable. This is a relatively new hotel and they are very accomodating and involved owners.

Some more attention to service would even improve an otherwise lovely and great place. For example, breakfast could be done better - without too much effort - and include a little fruit, or a variety of pastries. It was simply toast and coffee each day. Although our rooms were clean, the cleaning help should be more attentive to basics, like changing towels mid-week. Please note however, since the atmosphere is relaxed at Jade, whenever we asked, these items were replaced and needs met. But as a paying guests it is often more comfortable not to have to make too many requests. Just a suggestion. Since I rely on Trip Advisor reviews for my bookings I want to be clear, we would stay here again and do recommend this hotel - especially if you are looking for a thoughtful, exotic and quiet getaway.

The beach is outstanding, soft white powder sand that never gets hot, gentle ocean breezes and warm turquiose waters. I normally get bored with beaches after a couple hours but I was reluctant to leave this one and many days I didn't. The cabanas are amazing. Simple, charming, clean, they are perched amongst the trees 25 feet above the sand with the beach on one side and the jungle on the other. I don't know if it was the breeze or time of year but we stayed a week at the end of March 07 and didn't see one mosquito(that's worth the price alone). The vibe is mellow and unpretensiuos and so are the hosts, Juan and Martha. They're warm and easy going nature and generosity instantly made us feel genuinly welcome. It was like visiting friends who just happen to live in paradise. Don't be surprised if you are offered a beer or tequila in the afternoon and if you play an instrument, bring it because Juan is quick to break out his guitar. In the morning you'll find the best coffee in the world the kitchen area. There are no refrigeraters in the rooms but you can use the one in the kitchen which is centrallty located and not more than 1 minutes walk form any cababna or the beach. Ruins, diving and inexpensive good food are close by. One word of warning however, they have german shepard or "Coconut Retreiver" that will steal your heart.

We would definitely return to Jade Tulum. It's beautiful without being glitzy or touristy. Juan and Martha are very pleasant, welcoming hosts, and very laid back. We admired their committment to maintaining the ecological and ethnic integrity of Tulum - things like bringing in water rather than using wells that damage the local flora, or urging us to visit the Coba ruins so that we could see the cilization that was established there by indigenous people thousands of years ago.

More details - good and bad:
We arrived on a damp evening in February, and were devoured by mosquitos as we signed in for our stay. Juan kindly offered us a glass of wine while we talked. Our room (the "Water" room) was adequately sized, with a good mosquito net over the bed. The place could be upgraded to more of a "rustic chic" look with a new shower curtain and a bit more scrubbing, but the shower was warm (and not salty), the doors locked, the bed was clean and the location was stunning. I did see one cockroach in the shower when we first arrived, but I killed it, and didn't see any other bugs (except mosquitos) in the room for the rest of our 2-night stay.
The beach was very quiet and beautiful, with pale sand and warm turquoise water. There's no waiters bringing you pina coladas on the beach, but Juan will sell you some cervezas from the fridge. Perfect for quiet relaxation.
Tulum puebla, the town, is also quite worth visiting. Not excessively touristy, but with a good collection of little shops and bars, and some good local eateries. (Ask Juan or Martha for recommendations.)
The photos will give a good idea of the lovely surroundings. It's definitely not a full-service, sanitized place, but it really does have a lovely, relaxed, welcoming feel.

We booked Jade at the last moment based on reviewes in this site and were not disappointed
Yes, the rooms are not sealed shut, (and therefore we could easily sweep the sand on the floor through the floorboard cracks).
Yes, a few mosquitos flew in, but the nets were protective and we did not see a single cockaroach (as former new Yorkers we are familiar with the problem)
Yes, breakfast was limited to coffee, bread and jam but it was free, the coffee was excellent and the company (hosts and other guests) was super!
Yes there were no ceiling fans but the ocean breez was adeqate, we were never hot but I understand that in the summer months that is a problem.
The rooms (and we moved around three rooms) were simple but functional. Don't expect a room a la Hilton and you will not be disappointed.
The big asset of the place, as earlier reviewers mentioned are the owners (Juan and Martha) who make you feel so comfortable and are so accessible.
Some reviewers criticized Sylvia, the cleaning lady, we found the rooms clean, and Sylvia friendly and helpful.
Lets not forget Chile the dog who must have incorporated his owners perosnalities : friendly and always in a positive mood. He often accompanied us on our daily beach walks, hopefully one day he will lear that in a fetch game the dog has to let go of the fetched item (in this case a coconut) in order to continue the game...
We tried a number of local restaurants, they all cost about the same ($50-$60). We thought that the best value were Zamas and Mezenine, for food and views.
The bottom line: we would come back next year!
