Stayed one night in one of two "sky rooms" on top of hotel. It's a very "open" building with thatched roof, a lot of wooden beams, and the air moves through crevices quite freely. Room layout also 'open', with simple walls without doors separating the bedroom, bathroom, toilet, and shower areas. View over the beach and ocean through large window. King-sized bed, ideal for couple. Basic restaurant, only head breakfast there, included in room rate, small selection but good food. Right on small but quiet beach. No electricity after 11.

Me and my girlfriend spent four nights in one of the two cabanas(shacks) at the Luna Maya. They have real rooms in the main building though, that seem to offer more comfort than the cabanas.
Our cabana had a concrete floor, wooden walls and a lockable door. It was small and dim, but clean and with everiday housekeeping. They had clean linen but the shower towels were worn. We've been offered candles, a mosquito net as well as a bottle with water.
Tip: When staying in a cabana, bring a light cotton or silk sleeping bag (inlay) and mosquito repellent.
We also got a small bottle of wine and wineglasses for welcome; the staff was overall very helpful and friendly even though a little bit overwhelmed with preparing breakfast.
Luna Maya offers dinner, too and seems to have a good reputation for seafood. We went to the nearby restaurants for dinner though.
We've been disapointed because we thought, the cabanas were directly at the beach, but they are next to the entrance near the street.
Anyway it's a clean and cosy hotel site with sandy soil, nice palms and torches that enlight the way to the toilets and shower. It was fun cleaning teeth at an open sink next to the beach, which is very nice, but separated by rocks from the larger beaches to the north. On the beach the Luna Maya has sunbeds and chairs, and a few hammocks in the shade of palms. You can secure your valuables in a safe.
Because of the high seaon between xmas and new years eve we advance-booked on the internet, because we wanted to make sure to have a bed when arriving in Tulum. We've been told we paid too much. It shouldn't be a problem to get a nice place in Tulum in any price range in the off-season by just asking and haggling.

Me and my new husband went to Tulum on honeymoon and decided to try out Luna Maya (the sign is very difficult to see, so don't miss it when you drive by--if you've passed Zamas you've gone too far) for a week. We were on honeymoon and just looking for a place to relax and chill out and Luna Maya certainly allowed us to do that.
We got a free upgrade to the suite which was very nice, we had an ocean view and the ocean breeze kept us cool at night. It's a charming, quiet and private place. I don't think any of the other rooms had the ocean view, we would not have stayed if we had not gotten the upgrade. It was clean and the purified water in the room was a great touch. The towels and sheets were all pretty worn which was disappointing, but they were clean. The breakfast was pretty standard with your choice of a fruit plate or french toast or pancakes, but the only meat option was the ham in the omelet, some mornings the juice tasted fresh and other mornings it seemed like Tang. Also, there's this cute little cat who will eat whatever you feed him, including canteloupe. Also, there's this conk shell at the reception desk that when you blow in it the hotel dog will start howling, it's really funny.
The beach was nice, I liked the cove, it was private and quiet. The beach was awkward for swimming in, it was rocky in patches and the water was sandy, but the water was that great warm temperature. The hammocks they have hung are nice. The bar never seemed to be open except at night. We would always go to the restaurants in walking distance for the happy hour deals. Zamas has a really nice diverse restaurant with a great menu at acceptable prices and it is 50 ft away.
None of the workers speak any English, the manager speaks English but he's rarely around.
If you're going in the low season don't pay ahead of time like we did, you'll get a better rate if you bargain for it when you get there, as none of the hotels are even close to being full.
I wouldn't stay here if I went back, at the price that they charge they should provide better than worn-out sheets and towels.

I booked my stay at Luna Maya on the Boca Paila in Tulum based on their beautiful, professional-looking web site. If they had spent as much money fixing up their rooms as they did on the web site, this might be a decent place to stay. It would also be nice if their business tactics were as professional as their advertising.
When I booked my reservation, I provided my credit card info to hold my reservation. They never mentioned that they were going to immediately run my card through for the total amount. The web site mentions a deposit and cancellation policy, and says to be sure you agree to the terms. However, the way it's set up, you never see the terms. You enter your info and go to what you think is the next step, and discover that there is no next step, no policies, etc. Your credit card info is in their hands and that's it. I've gone over the site several times to see if I made a mistake or misunderstood anything. No way.
When I got there, the grounds outside were nice enough. The rooms are not on the beach, but rather right next to the road. The restaurant is situated in front of the rooms, so the view of the beach is totally blocked. So is the air.
When I saw my room my spirits dropped. The cozy, clean, bright little room shown on the website was much smaller and dingier in person. The little artistic decorating touches were gone. Interestingly, the walls that were shown in the photos had been painted -- the others had not and were dirty and gray. The bathroom appeared to have once been a closet.... You ended up standing in the room when you stood in front of the sink. Just to the left was a small shower, which sprayed water into the room. To the right was the toilet. When I sat on it, my feet hit the wall in front of me. There was no place to put anything except on the floor. They offer purifed water, but since it came in a pitcher instead of sealed bottles, I had no way of knowing if it was purified or not.
The beach was all right, but not what I wanted. It's completely enclosed on both sides by rocks, like a little cove. I preferred an open expanse of beach. The area is shared with another hotel. There were a few beach chairs and a little shade. I didn't go into the water there, so I can't comment on whether or not it's rocky.
The one night I spent there was miserable. The web site advertises electricity (and ceiling fans) from 6 p.m. to midnight. In reality, the electricity ran from about 7 - 10 p.m. Because the breeze from the ocean is completely blocked by the restaurant (which is elevated a bit), there was absolutely no air flow into the room. This might not matter so much during the cooler months, but in September it was stifling. I finally got to sleep sometime after 2:30 a.m., but was awakened at 6:30 the next morning by a worker raking the sand and cleaning the grounds outside my window. I could have lived with that and gone back to sleep, except his cell phone rang three times between 6:30 and 7:00.
Breakfast is included in the price, and was just okay. I ordered tea to start, which didn't come until about twenty minutes later when my breakfast arrived. They only offered herbal tea, which I don't care for in the morning, so I requested coffee instead. Although tolerable, it came to me in a cup with two good-sized chips in the rim. Although this is Mexico and I wasn't expecting luxury, this is the only place I encountered chipped dishes. The fruit plate I ordered (eggs are also offered) was large and fresh, but covered with Pepto-Bismol pink yogurt. I scraped most of it off and discovered that the beautiful fruit salad was also being served on a chipped plate.
When I made my plans to move to another property known and asked to speak to the manager, the staff indicated that he wasn't there and offered me a different room. This was the "suite" shown on the site. It was much larger and nicer than my original room, but still not quite as nice as depicted online. There was a breeze from the ocean, but it was only accessible through a side door that had to be left open. Since I am a female traveling alone, I wasn't comfortable with sleeping with my door open and I declined the offer of the upgraded room.
I returned in the afternoon to speak with the manager about refunding my money for the next five nights. He became angry and insisted that my opinion of the place and the deceptive web site was just wrong. He also suggested that I survey the guests and ask their opinions of the place, saying that everyone else was very happy there. I declined, and he ultimately agreed to refund my money. When I asked him to put it in writing, he became offended and asked if I thought he was a liar.... Four days later there was no refund activity on my bank account, so I stopped in again to speak to the manager. A staff member went to get him, then came back several minutes later saying that he wasn't there. I pointed out that his car was out front, but the young man insisted it belonged to someone else. I went into Tulum for breakfast, and afterward as I was heading out of town, the manager, driving the car from the hotel, was heading in. I got a very polite email that day (which I've saved) saying that my refund had been processed and would be completed within 15 days. I've waited 16 days now, and have given up and decided to go ahead and post my comments. I wish I could say that management at Luna Maya was professional and trustworthy, but....
In short, I'd avoid this place at all costs. There are plenty of much nicer places to stay (I moved to the beautiful and comfortable Posada Lamar for US$10 less a night). It's not a complete dump, but based on their lying to me I have to downgrade my rating from a 2 to a 1.
