We loved the central location of the hotel - right in the buzz of the hotel zone. When planning a 3 week holiday for a family of three with scuba diving, price is an important factor. This was the cheapest option that we could find, offering a proper room and own bathroom and we loved it! We had one of the rooms on the other side of the road and it did not bother us at all. We were out most of the day and basically used our room to sleep in. We loved the fact that each room is unique (stayed in two because of a double booking!). Our 5 year old loved the arty shower and hammock on the veranda! There are always taxis in this area, which makes it easy to get to Tulum at all times of the day or night. The two girls at receptions were wonderful in helping to book trips and assist in answering our hundreds of questions. We booked a day trip to Sian Kaan, which we felt was a waste of money (although great fun, it was a bit too touristy for us who wanted to see more of the wildlife and nature). Did the best cenote dives with Cenote Dive Centre in Tulum , including a very unsual cenote called, Angelita (highly recommended for advanced divers). We found the restaurants on the hotel zone overpriced so opted to rather take a taxi into town (we like local stuff!). If you want the real Mexican experience try the Cocina Economica on the left hand side at the bottom end of town. Where you choose your food in the kitchen - at half the price!!!
We also took many day trips from there, including Xcaret (although a big tourist destination, it was great, especially if you have children!). The day trip to Achumal was also fun, offering a wonderful beach and great snorkeling.
We never rented a car once, but used the local taxis (standard $4 from the hotel into town) and "collectivos" to get to other towns (Tulum to Playa $2.5).
Do not take the local bus (ADO)! We only decide to do it because our 5 year old wanted to go on the bus. We booked and paid for our seats, the bus was running late, and then were chased off the bus as all the seats were double booked!

We stayed at Posada Del Sol for three nights last week. After reading the previous review, I realized that our room (#3) was actually across the street, even though when I booked it I thought it was on the beach side of Boca Paila. I am glad I was prepared for that when I arrived, because it does not mention that on their website (even though the girl at the front desk- who had major attitude, but whatever, it could have been the language barrier- insisted that the website was very clear).

The room was beautiful! It was big and really nicely decorated. The patio was shaded by palm trees which blocked the road, and we loved lounging out there in the hammock. Although the major part of the view from the patio was the roof of Trecelunas next door, it was still very private.

That being said, although it was very private, and we were able to keep the doors and windows open without worrying about people seeing in, it was VERY NOISY! The room is right above the road, and all day and ALL NIGHT there were trucks rumbling down the road. We also had to endure the sounds of the garage doors opening and closing for the surrounding businesses.

The first night I was ready to go, but Ms. Attitude at the front desk was very strict with the cancellation policy, and in the end I am glad she was. During the same trip we also stayed at Posada Dos Ceibas, Tita Tulum, and Cabanas La Conchita. Out of the four places, this one was our favorite room (and the best price). The beach was not great. The little cove that it shares with La Conchita and other cabanas has a lot of sea weed, and rough waves.

One other great thing about Posada Del Sol is it's location on Boca Paila. It is within walking distance of tons of great restaurants (Zamas, Trecelunas) and shops.

Please feel free to contact me with questions, especially because there aren't very many reviews for this hotel.

“Stunning!”

I stayed in the room Coral for $140. I think it may be one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed. The rooms are adobe with wooden beams and cuts of trees used for tables and shelves -- all quite artistically done. There's a large king size bed with embroidered covers and pillows. But the most phenomenal offering was the windows on all sides with views of the caribbean about 50 metres away. At night, there's some electricity via solar/wind power. It makes it romantic/peaceful/serene - the breezes from the water, the glow of orange candlelight, the rhythym of the waves.

The only drawback is that there's not really a restaurant or main gathering place but if you're looking for someplace surreal in its beauty -- stay in the room Coral. The other reality is that this is pretty enjoined with nature and more primitive so if you have an aversion to being too close to the elements (i.e - i had to coax a cockroach out the door) then this may not be the place. I agree with the other review - across the street is just not as nice, and Zahra hotel which is next store is more expensive and not near as nice.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Posada del Sol, the sister hotel to Posada Lamar, for 4 nights in early February 2007. After conducting a considerable amount of "research" on TA, locogringo, and others, we decided to stick our necks out a bit and choose somewhere we hadn’t heard much about because the price was right ($80/night) and some of our other choices weren’t available on the dates we were traveling.

In order to book, we contacted the property directly and left a deposit for 2 nights, which doesn’t seem atypical for Tulum's "eco resorts." I do wish we could have saved the $50 international wire transfer fee by simply leaving a credit card. In any case, "checking in" was easy - we just pulled up in front and said we were staying in room two and the nice girl in the shop/office put the key in the door while we were parking. Three quick things about the parking: 1) it’s somewhat limited 2) if you have something bigger than a compact, its going to be a bit of a squeeze, and 3) rent the car on a credit card with car insurance (see item 2).

The hotel is in a relatively dense cluster of hotels in a central location, and shares an 80 yard stretch of sandy beach with Conchitas and Azulik, which are situated directly to the north. The beach was clean and uncrowded, although it seems that Posada del Sol is a bit short on lounge chairs. They certainly don’t have the fancy beach bed set-ups of some other places down the beach. On either side the beach is bookended by large rocks. The rocks provided a nice place to sit in the evening, but didn’t allow for a long uninterrupted stroll. If that is what you intend to do, you might want to stay further south, closer to the biosphere.

It is important to note that some of the rooms are across the street from the beach (including ours) and they don’t say that explicitly on the website or anywhere else. It seems that if it doesn’t say ocean front, it’s across the street – which we found to be a little louder, a little hotter (no breeze), and a little less private. If you are going to stay in a room across the street, consider getting one of the ones upstairs. Our downstairs room was large and clean, with no frills and a very airy setup. I wouldn’t suggest sharing this particular room with somebody you’re shy with, but it was fine for us. The bed was very firm, and they provided mosquito netting which was very effective and added to the ambiance. As can be expected in most of Tulum, electricity was limited to nighttime use, and we had a few instances of minor maintenance issues, but they were handled promptly. My only real complaint with our room was that there were no curtains covering the windows at the foot of the bed.

Overall, I would say that Posada del Sol is a perfectly fine choice; however, if you are expecting to bond with the other guests or the hotel staff, or if you want to stay someplace with a restaurant/bar there are better choices. You will likely only nod hello to the other guests on your way to the beach or diving and only see the staff when you’re perusing the gift shop (nicer than most). If you’re looking for a reasonably priced, clean, central jumping off point, this is a fine one; if you need easy access to long beaches, lots of attention or something fancy consider other options.
