I traveled to Tulum for the wedding of a friend with a large group, we had most of this hotel occupied with 20-30 year old couples. Amongst our group there was a wide range of reactions from abject spoiled-American horror at the less-than ritzy conditions to blissful acceptance of the gorgeous surroundings.
I read many of the reviews here (after I had reserved my room) and had a lot of apprehension going in. At first my fears were mostly confirmed. No power, check. Strange smells, check. No fridge/tv/microwave/fan, check. Funky (though clean) bathroom, check. Hard bed, etc.
But then I walked out the door.. and the beach was glorious. White sand, pure aqua waves and sun that even when overcast and stormy was still warm. We swam in the waves and in the salt pool (it was clean when we arrived but after a few days was looking slimy) laid in the sun and sat out on the porch with many a drink. The stars as well were amazing and the birds, lizards and lush plants were a delight.
Some in our group could not take the lack of accommodations and actually changed hotels. Some just bit ched endlessly. I was a little put out at the price (we paid 150$ after taxes) for the level of service, particularly since some things like having the power on were just a matter of complaining leading one to believe that service was withheld intentionally to keep the costs down. Also they outright lied about the restaurant, they turned the 'vacancy' sign away when the hotel was full but kept the 'restaurant' sign up the whole time and put up another sign about a continental breakfast . The only food/drink of any kind offered was some weak coffee and some complimentary bottles of water.
For me the negatives were not as big a deal as I thought. The lack of appliances was meaningless, anyone who would stay inside in paradise watching tv is a fool. The only time I wanted the power on more was when I had to use the john during the day and could not see in there without the door open. We were on the first floor and I really missed being able to leave our door open at night to get the breeze and listen to the waves. The AC was plenty to keep the room sleepable and usually turned off well after we were up and ready to go.
When I go back to Tulum (and I will) I don't think I will stay at this hotel again. There were other places that seemed cheaper with the same or better amenities (hammocks, screen doors etc.) except for the ac. If you have ever been camping and did not whine the whole time you can probably handle this place and have a great time but I am still not convinced the price is reasonable and the dishonest presentation left a bad feeling.
Oh and btw, the spa consisted of a sign that read 'Therautic Massage' which was pretty funny at least.
