We stayed at the icefield chalet for 2 nights. It was a great central location between Banff and Jasper. We had a beautiful view of the glacier and were able to get an early start on the icefield tour that morning before the crowds arrived. (they get up to 4,000 per day)
Avoid the restaurant at all cost. Very overpriced, small portions, poor service and food with no flavor. they have no competition and it is obvious that they know it. Eat at the crossings about 45 minutes south instead or use the cafeteria before it closes at 6 PM.
Even better than the icefield tour is a hike to Parker's Ridge about 1/2 hour south which gives you a fabulous view of mountains and glaciers.
