A lovely hotel in an ideal location. But it let itself down because of the heating. We stayed at the end of September when it wasn't particularly warm (we had snow!) but it was like a sauna inside the bedrooms. Although we had booked a room which opened to the outside (my mother in law had one of the internal rooms which was much, much worse) the heat was such that we had to have the windows open all day and all night. Unfortunately, our room was above the garbage area, and all day and all night bins were being moved, emptied, ransanked...whatever! Add that to the train horns and we found we had 3 very uncomfortable nights.
On the plus side, the staff are excellent. The Caramba restaurant was superb and the location of the hotel is really close to the centre. Be careful if you're going to Banff before the end of November, there is extensive remodelling of their high street, and the dusk and building rubble makes walking around a little difficult if any of your party are a little unsteady on their feet. The poor shop keepers are pulling their hair out because all of the stock is covered in a fine film of dust! But it should be finished soon.
I would probably not stay at the Ptarmigan again simply because
of the heating, not because of anything else. If however you are staying there during the winter, I would expect it to be nice and cosy!
