Just back from a fantastic week in Banff staying at the Ptarmigan Inn. The service and facilities at the hotel were much better than Irwin's Mountain Inn where i stayed earlier in the year (however the price was similar). The Ptarmigan has a great location, close to all the shops, bars and restaurants on Banff Ave. The staff were all very helpful - they even extended our check out time when they found out our flight had been delayed, without us even asking!!
The room we had was big, with 2 comfy queen size beds. We had room at the rear of the hotel with views of the mountains, this was a quite location with no noise (apart from the trains that come through Banff which you can't get away from!).
The food in the Caramba restaurant for breakfast was good to set you up for a day on the slopes!

Booked this hotel instead of our usual because they were renovating and didn't have their whirl pool open. We'll they didn't tell us when we booked but this hotels whirl pool was closed too! It was more expensive and isn't any nicer.

“The Wonderful Find in Banff”

Banff Ptarmigan Inn

Great location. Far enough from the refreshing project on Banff Ave to not be affected in anyway. Limited underground parking. But hotel was full so parking wasn't a problem. Staff very helpful and friendly. If you are traveling in the summer upgrade to a superior room. The interior rooms have no outdoor windows and we heard the rooms were stuffy. We saw many doors that were opened into the atriium and this was in Sept. Our room had a outdoor balcony and it was great! We choose not to eat at the restaurant due to the previous reviews. Mellisa's right around the corner has a wonderful breakfast. Barpie Bills down the road from the main drag had wonderful Greek Food that was dirt cheap for the area. Bottom line we would stay here again it was the jewel of hotels in Banff.

“Good location, but rooms far too hot!”

Banff Ptarmigan Inn

1 Oct 2007

A lovely hotel in an ideal location. But it let itself down because of the heating. We stayed at the end of September when it wasn't particularly warm (we had snow!) but it was like a sauna inside the bedrooms. Although we had booked a room which opened to the outside (my mother in law had one of the internal rooms which was much, much worse) the heat was such that we had to have the windows open all day and all night. Unfortunately, our room was above the garbage area, and all day and all night bins were being moved, emptied, ransanked...whatever! Add that to the train horns and we found we had 3 very uncomfortable nights.
On the plus side, the staff are excellent. The Caramba restaurant was superb and the location of the hotel is really close to the centre. Be careful if you're going to Banff before the end of November, there is extensive remodelling of their high street, and the dusk and building rubble makes walking around a little difficult if any of your party are a little unsteady on their feet. The poor shop keepers are pulling their hair out because all of the stock is covered in a fine film of dust! But it should be finished soon.
I would probably not stay at the Ptarmigan again simply because
of the heating, not because of anything else. If however you are staying there during the winter, I would expect it to be nice and cosy!
