Stayed 2 nights in a 2 bedroom unit at the end of January. The first room we received was an "un-renovated one". It was old, the cupboard was falling of the hinges, the closet door was missing, tiles in the washroom/showers were black. The carpets were stained and dirty. Over all, it was just bad! To top it off, housekeeping did a bad job in getting it ready as there were still crumbs of food on the counter and carpets. The second room we were given was worse.
On the third attempt, the hotel was able to get us the last of the newly renovated rooms. The room was night and day to the non renovated room. I'm not saying that it's the best on Banff Avenue, as I've stayed in better rooms. But considering what we were given to start, it was better by far.
I'll have to give the front desk clerk who helped us out that night applause for her patience and understanding as we went back time and time again to get a better room. However I honestly think that we got the older rooms because we booked and paid via Expedia, which offered a great rate. I get a feeling that had we payed rack rate or booked it directly with the hotel, we would haver received the newer rooms right away.
I don't think they should even bother selling the old rooms as it just shows how shappy the hotel is. Why risk loosing future business or bad word of mouth??
The last complaint that I have is that even in the newer room the housekeeping was only passable. There were sections of carpet that had dirt on it, a dead fly on one of the walls and stains on the sheets... and trust me when I say that I didn't purposely go around looking for problems!
I didn't get to use the amenities (indoor pool, gym, restaurant etc) as we were there for a short time, so can't comment but the location is furthest away from the main strip. Luckily they have a shuttle. But perhaps in the summer, I would rather find something that's within walking distance to the shops on Banff Ave.
Overall, I would return, only if I can be guaranteed a newly renovated room and if they have a great sale on.
