“Great for Little Kids”

Douglas Fir Resort

1 Feb 2008

We had a great visit here with three families, each with one toddler and one baby. We found out about it through a friend and learned a lot more from it on this website. We had such a good time that it has prompted me to register for this site so I can leave a review!

The condos are in duplexes each family rented one condo (two x one bedroom with loft, one x one bedroom). Two of us put one child in the bedroom and slept in the same room with the other, one of us slept all together in the loft. Our baby monitors worked between units as we were all in the same building so we were able to put all the kids to bed and then hang out in one person's living room every night! It was great.

We did bring a playpen for our toddler & ended up getting an extra one from the front desk to put the baby in. We left that one set up in the living room & it was useful to have both for naps as well.

The playzone is fantastic and is currently open 8am to 8pm which is perfect. There is a small area for little toddlers and then a great climby section which is just amazing for anyone who is walking. There is a small (warm enough) pool & small whirlpool which hotel guests can access 24hrs, great for kids to hang out in. Then the main pool area has this great little shallow pool for toddlers with two slides, a giant hot tub and a larger pool with two waterslides! In winter they are open 4pm to 10pm M-F and 10am to 10pm Sat&Sun. The slides are great and we were able to take our 20 month old on them with us holding her, sitting up (we did put a life jacket on her and held her up high when we got to the bottom of the slide!).

I booked this by phone and had great service, asking a lot of questions about where the rooms are located etc. They were so nice. When I finally booked all three condos, I asked if we could all be in one building and if we could be close to the main building to be close to the indoor stuff. They did exactly this and it was just perfect!

We cooked most nights and went out to eat a few times as well--perfect to have a kitchen right there with kids of course.

We were so happy with this place and we are seriously considering making this an annual trip. Banff is amazing and we just had the best time. This place offers a great set of indoor things for kids so that if it's cold, or you just don't feel like trekking outside again, there is lots to do for them. And one parent can manage more than one kid so the other one can go off and do something--especially if you are with friends.

Hope that convinces you!

My husband and I stayed at the Douglas Fir from Jan 11-13 with our three girls aged 4, 6 & 12, and we had a wonderful time. We booked an in-house loft, with full kitchen, 1 1/2 baths and fireplace.

Our girls had a blast! They had their own room upstairs, and my husband and I used the Murphy bed by the fire which was very nice. The unit was very clean, and I'm pretty picky. Our fridge wasn't working when we got there so we called down to the front desk and a maintenance guy was up in less than five minutes. Check-in was quick and painless, as was check-out.

The kids LOVED the waterslides and the playplace. They were crushed when we had to leave. My only complaint was our bed. It was the hardest I have ever slept on in my life! I would have to make sure we had something different for next time because we'll be staying longer as this was our trial run. We may make it a yearly tradition. Banff is so beautiful and the resort can't be beat for activities for children to burn off some steam before bed.

3 of us stay at this hotel during Christmas, I will visit again for sure. It is great for family who has kids, as they got the pool, water slide, steam room, plus the one bedroom suit was perfect for us, so kids have separate area to sleep.

But the hotel is a bit old, deco is old and dark in the room.

This one of those places that has all of these "enjoy our smoke free resort" signs and then does not even comply with existing smoking regulations. There has been a ban on smoking in enclosed parkades that children are allowed in all over Alberta for two years now. Yet there are cigarettes, smoke, and no signs in the parkade. This is what you go through to get to the play area and front desk. They also have decided to have smoking areas in all of the patios, so I definitely do not regard this as a real "smoke free" resort. Why lure the non smokers and then tick them off?

The check in clerk was reasonable and the check out clerk was almost surly. She didn't ask about the stay and I didn't tell her.

We were in the main building,. It didn't look like the panel of the stove had been washed in some time. There was a lot of noise from other rooms and the hallway. Not only were the kids from another room yelling in the hallway, but the cleaning staff uses two way radios in the hallways to communicate. Obviously no consideration whatsoever for the guests.

The bed wasn't all that comfortable and overall, I would neither stay in the hotel again nor recommend it to anyone.

I'm sure it is good for some people (like those who do not spend much time in a hotel room or care about smoke and noise) but in my opinion, it is an overpriced and not very nice property. The convenience store makes other places in Banff seem like Wal Mart.

We stayed at this hotel in a 1-bedroom condo for three nights and will definately stay there again.

The room was extremely clean and we were able to take advantage of their Fall Getaway package which included passes to the hot springs, breakfast items to cook in the suite (cereal, milk, bread, bacon, eggs, cream), and gondola passes all for under $100 per night.

The front desk wasn't very friendly and seemed to be 'busy' on the computer. Their playcenter is great and also very clean.

Having a tv in the bedroom of the unit would have been great as our toddlers were sleeping in the living room, so when they went to bed we weren't able to watch tv.
