My family and extended family stayed at Douglas Fir in mid March for several days. As Calgarians, we have been coming to this resort off and on for over 18 years.
Advantages:
The simple reason why we have repeatedly stayed here is that it is great for kids. The water slide, kiddie pool and Jacuzzi offer good fun for a variety of ages. The hotel also has a secondary pool and Jacuzzi for hotel guests only. My two kids who are 2 and 4 also loved the 3 story play zone. When combined with roving wildlife, nice views and walking trails, Douglas Fir makes a good family vacation spot.
We have also never had difficulty with staff friendliness. Everyone we have encountered has always been friendly and outgoing. Many of the hotels staff are young people from Australia who are vacationing/working in the Mountains.
Disadvantages:
COST. When my family goes, we rent a condo in one of the fourplexes. These sleep 8 comfortably and have all the amenities needed in a small kitchen. The cost however is becoming prohibitive at almost $350 - 400/night. This makes a two day stay expensive even before sightseeing, food etc is added on.
Quality: When Douglas Fir was built they went with the rustic look. The problem with rustic is that after 30 years it becomes shabby. The resort has tried to update by putting in new tub surrounds, changing carpet, redoing kitchen countertops etc. However, it is still starting to look a bit run down. Unfortunately for the price charged, this rubs a lot of people the wrong way. There are nicer hotels in Banff for the same or less money.
Bottom Line:
I'm giving this hotel an above average rating simply because in all of Banff there is no other place which comes close to offering the same amenities for families. (Both my kids started crying when we left) The rating does not reflect room and price quality. On these fronts, Douglas Fir is just average.
