We loved our vacation in Banff, and the High Country Inn was a perfect place to stay! The staff was very friendly and helpful, from the moment we booked our reservation. The High Country Inn was not only the most reasonably priced (for Banff, that is!), but it was so convenient to the main area. We received free parking (and walked everywhere) and free continental breakfast! The breakfast was delicious. We saved a lot of money by buying groceries at Safeway and using the refrigerator and microwave in the room.

The hotel itself is very rustic and homey, with carpeted indoor stairs, a cozy lobby, a nice restaurant, and a beautiful pool. The pool is bright and airy with an outdoor view of the mountains and pine trees. The two jacuzzis really offered nice relaxation at the end of the day after hiking the mountains.

The room, a "separate sleeper", was big, and we all enjoyed walking out to the balcony to admire the beautiful view and breath in the fresh (and cold!) air.

We hope to go back some day, if possible!

I had a difficult time booking a room for under 200 dollars that was also airconditioned. We were pleased with the room, I think we had a junior suite with a queen bed in one room (with a balcony) and a murphy bed in the other room that had a small refrigerator and table and chairs. I think if the breakfast was in a smaller room and more tastefully decorated, it would not appear to be marginal. They had cereal, juices, waffles. muffins, etc., but seem to be unorganized. However, they do cater to large tour groups (who we met) and may need the larger space. They were the only hotel in our 2 weeks vacation that did offer a free breakfast. It was about 4 blocks from town. The front desk staff went out of their way to help us and just to chat about life in Canada. We were very pleased.

I won't try this hotel again. Our family of 4 spent one evening here while travelling through to Sicamous for a houseboating vacation.
While there is underground parking it doesn't work if you have a van or, in our case, a car top carrier on your vehicle. Parking in back is limited but we managed to get a spot. We would not have wanted to park on the street for safety and security of our property in the vehicle. Luckily the accomodation is near enough to downtown that we just walked to a restaurant after finding a parking spot in back of the hotel.

Upon arriving we were 'upgraded' to a suite but I didn't enjoy it. There was a larger room with one bed in it but it was only a double. The children slept on a murphy bed. I was not up for moving around all that furniture to pull out the bed. The room was also an odd shape. The bathroom was ok but the tub could have used a caulking and there was little water pressure. The room seemed clean but there was a funny odor and i didn't feel comfortable in my bare feet on the carpet. I think they might allow pets. I would prefer to stay in a hotel that did not allow pets.

The elevator in this hotel is scary. It was small and didn't seem very safe. There are a lot of steps in this hotel which makes it awkward to carry your suitcase, especially if it is large; it is difficult if you have any type of disablitiy.

The breakfast in the morning is ok. It was a novelty to make a waffle. They had toast and cereal and fruit and juice as well.

I wasn't particularly interested in their pool area.

There is no view from the odd shaped balcony on our suite and there was noise from traffic in the morning. There was an extra mirror over a dresser in the bedroom but not enough light to see well enough to put on makeup etc. The staff was friendly enough for the limited contact we had with them.

As i said at the beginning, i won't return to this hotel and wouldn't recommend it.

Our room at the High Country Inn was great. It was a family suite with kitchenette. Our room was newly decorated and worked great for our family of 5. We had two queen beds in seperate areas and a queen murphy bed that was built into a oak wall unit. The unit was very clean. The Inn has great indoor pool facilities. It is within walking distance of all the Banff shops and restaurants.

My only disappointment was in the free breakfast (therefore, I shouldn't complain.) It was a limited offering and was served in a dated meeting room. That room should be next on their update list.

Overall, our stay was great. Be patient if you need the elevator--they run very slow.

“One techie away from an excellent deal”

We made reservations on short notice. We paid about $200 CDN for the room. Our room was spacious, decently decorated, and clean. The staff members were nice, even sweet. Our stay came with a good selection of food for a continental breakfast (fruit, homemade waffles, muffins, juices, cereal).

The pool and whirlpool were good, especially after finishing a long hike. In contrast to the nice staff, the wicked stepsisters appeared to have written the pool area signs. They were everywhere, and went beyond the usual warnings and prohibitions. I normally am fine with following the rules, but there were so many of them posted in so many places that I suddenly felt the urge to run on the deck, make loud noises, splash water out of the pool, and wear shoes in the pool area.

We ran into some technical problems. These were more substantial. We had chosen the High Country Inn partly because they had wireless internet. It didn't work. The staff tried rebooting the modem, but it didn't help. Their technical person had already gone home for the day. We had wanted to make some changes to the rest of our trip, but had to leave it intact because we couldn't get online.

The other technical problem was that the magnetic stripe room keys didn't work. We had to go back to the desk to get a second set. The second set opened our room, but not the pool area. A key just for the pool area didn't work either.

Because the staff was so friendly, we really wanted to enjoy it more. There was a handwritten note in our room welcoming us. They knew where everything in town was located. They tried hard to help with the tech stuff and eventually got the keys right. If everything had worked right the first time, I would have given a much higher rating.
