The Driftwood is a decent hotel but could use some TLC. It is right near downtown Banff and therefore walking distance to everything. The rooms themselves are fairly nice but we did have a few difficulties with our stay. First, the check-in is in the hotel next door - you will find that with the sign on the hotel door, there is very little parking but you will find a spot if you look. You can use the hotel next doors hot tub, dry & wet saunas but one of the hot tubs was not working and the front desk staff failed to let us know the code to get in so we had to make another trip up. Our ice machine was not working but the one on the 1st floor of Ptarmagan was working great so we went there. Finally, upon entering our room, the door was stuck on the latch, so after a push, the door frame ripped off and the door would not lock. Maintenance came right away and worked all evening on the door, they finally got a make shift door frame so we could lock the door when we slept. I would go back because the location and the cost was one of the lowest in Banff.

“Not too Pleased--Horrible Service and Room”

Driftwood Inn

14 Feb 2008

To start, there wasn't any parking available and we had to drive up and down the street to find a spot along the curb.
Our room was on the 2nd floor up , no elevator and 2 flights of stairs with heavy luggage.

The room was freezing when we arrived (on a day it was -25C), and the staff told us the window had a draft. I demanded they do something, so they brought a tiny space heater, that wasn't enough large enough to heat the bathroom. The space heater kept turning off every 10 min. The room never did get warm and later upon arriving to our room after a night out, at 2am we didn't have ANY electricity, and the room was still freezing. The bathroom ceiling had condensation and leaked drops of water onto the overhead lighting after we took our showers (not too safe!), as well as the bathroom vanity and floor.

The staff were not very helpful and told us we should have kept calling and doing more ourselves. Well, how many times can one person call the front desk to ask these problems get fixed? We were very disappointed in how we were treated and the staff couldn't have cared less.

I would not recommend the Driftwood Inn... there are PLENTY OF OTHER HOTELS in the same vicinity.

The hotel is perfectly located on the main High Street and is ideal for accessing the many forest walks around Banff. The room itself was very clean and tidy, room was a little dark and very warm but we discovered an ice machine down the hall that was perfect for chilling the bottles of water we bought from the supermarket down the road. For a great breakfast and a huge cup of tea, Evelyns Bakery in the High Street is great value for money. All in all the hotel is perfect if you don't want anything too fancy, pricey and are just after a comfy stay in a great location!

The Driftwood Inn is right on Banff Ave. When you drive into the town, it is on the right side. It is very easy to miss, so look for the sign that says "Caramba Restaurant" and the turn is 5 feet in front of that sign.

Check in is at the front desk of the hotel next door. The staff at the front desk were fantastic. I wanted to book some time at the spa and the staff at the front desk booked it and set everything up for me.

Location is great, it is a half a block to the main area of Banff, with a starbucks 2 minutes away by foot. (The most important thing:) ). For the price that we paid, it was perfect. The room had a cottage feel to it and the bed was super comfortable.

I would suggest putzing around Banff and checking everything out. I have yet to go wrong with anything we have done there.

The Hot Springs are a must, so bring a bathing suit. Sulpher Mountain is great, and all the spas are very accomodating, especially the Red Earth Spa.

If you can, go over to Canmore and check out that town as well. On main street there is a place called "The Bagel Co." It has the best bagel sandwiches and a very laid back relaxing feeling to it. Very trendy

Enjoy your travels

I have just returned from 5 nights at the Driftwood Inn. I have to agree with the comments which point out that the hotel is clearly a budget hotel and as such you get what you pay for and probably a bit more. The bedroom was clean and the bed extremely comfortable. My radio alarm was broken when I arrived but the maid replaced it promptly. The communal areas are a little past their best, but you have to remember it is a budget hotel! The shared facilities at the Ptarmigan make up for any deficiencies. I ate at the Caramba in the Ptarmigan one night and was impressed with the food and service- this coming from someone who normally finds hotel restaurants to be poor.
