My wife and I stayed here with two friends from 27th – 29th December 2007 as part of a self-organised trip around the Rockies. Since my wife first saw a picture of the Chateau when she was young she had always wanted to stay here, so it was fantastic to finally make it. We were so impressed that we didn’t leave from the minute we arrived to the minute we left, of course with the exception of getting out and about in the hotel’s grounds and around the lake.
As expected, the hotel was beautifully decorated and the lobby was stunning. Check-in was efficient, the Concierge dealt with all our activity plans and the staff in the restaurants and bars were friendly.
Our room on the eighth of eight floors probably had the best view from a hotel we have ever had, even including Table Mountain in Cape Town and Sydney Harbour. It cannot be described, and if you do choose to stay at the Chateau, it would be crazy not to get a lake view (even though the window is small). That is what it all boils down to – being able to see Lake Louise first thing in the morning and last thing at night. It was smaller than the average hotel room, but the bed was big and comfortable and the bathroom was fine. There was plenty of storage space and we never felt cramped. But let’s be honest, you don’t come to Lake Louise to sit in your room!
For breakfast we bought takeaway coffees and pastries in the Chateau Deli which set us up for the morning. We ate lunch twice in the country themed Glacier Saloon, which was geared towards casual, family dining. In the evening we tried two different restaurants – the Walliser Stube where we had fondue and did a wine tasting, and then on the Friday evening we went to the Tom Wilson Steakhouse and were very well looked after, with superb Alberta steaks and great wine. We also had a few afternoon drinks in the Lakeview Lounge bar.
Throughout our stay we did the following activities, all of which were organised by the hotel and were within a 3 minute walk of the front door: ice skating on Lake Louise and exploring the ice castle; a horse drawn sleigh ride around the lake’s perimeter; a 3-hour snow-shoeing guided trail at night which concluded in a genuine igloo; a 2-hour cross-country skiing lesson; and a guided tour of the hotel which explained its 100-year history from a small wooden cabin to the chateau we know today. There was a full itinerary of seasonal activities catering for all ages and levels of fitness.
Finally, any criticism that the hotel is ‘too big’ or ‘looks out of place’ is simply nonsense as it fits into the landscape perfectly, and offers luxury accommodation, dining and activities at a price that is not outrageous.
If you get the opportunity to stay here, do not hesitate. And don’t forget to book a room with a lake view!
