While most reviewers obviously are impressed with Rouge, I'm compelled to share our concerns. While the ambiance is nice and the server was attentive, it is ridiculously over-priced for what you get.
The chef's dinner was $95 and they refused to tell you what you'd be getting if you ordered it - that's crazy, asking patrons to blindly fork over $95 and take a chance like that. So, as much as we would have liked to consider it, we passed.
Most of the basics are there - beef, lamb, fish - but they try way too hard to dress them up with weird accoutrements for the sake of trendiness. It was hard to find something safe to choose from the menu. Literally none of the soups, salads or appetizers sounded appealing so I passed although the rest of our table did each find something to their tastes.
In fairness, I see they do post their menu online, so I acknowledge I should have checked it out before heading to the restaurant.
Why though, when you're charged $35 to $40 for a main course, do they feel compelled to cut corners and just put 2 or 3 tiny scraps of vegetables on the plate?
Most offensive though was when our guests ordered the Chateaubriand done medium. When it came rare and they complained, the chef had the gall to come out and say "well, no one else complains and it only looks rare because our walls are red". It was obviously blood rare and all he had to say was "I'm sorry I screwed it up, how can I make it right"
Finally, the wine list similarly tries too hard to also be trendily over-priced.
You expect so much more when you're dropping $100 per person for dinner all-in. There are just too many other solid restaurants in Calgary that give way better value for your money.
