I deeply regret spending my 3 nights in Edmonton, at the Mayfield. The hotel itself is old and grungy. I stayed in a Deluxe King, in the Mayfield towers. The wallpaper was stained, peeling and bubbling. I could feel the springs jabbing into my spine all night, every night. The bedspread looked like it was from the 70's and smelled like it had never been washed. The temperature control in the room didn't work, so I felt like I was in a sauna when ever in my room, and made it even more impossible to fall asleep. The fan in the room, when turned on the max, was barely strong enough to blow a feather, and the window only opened partially, and wasn't much of a help either.
When I called the front desk no one answered. It took 4 tries to get someone. When I finally did, they talked down to me like I was an adolescent child.
I was so exhausted by the third night, I thought to arrange a late check out since I had finally managed to get my room to a somewhat tolerable temperature. It states in the guest book that you can do this for a charge. When I called down, no answer, again, and again, and again. Finally I got someone, who said I had to call back in the morning. Begrudgingly, I set my alarm to wake up and call in the morning. I called down, no answer, again and again. When I finally got someone, I was told that they "Do not ever offer late check out at the Mayfield."
The rooms and the front desk are not the only reasons you shouldn't stay at the Mayfield. Any tame I went to the Botanica restaurant I had to wait at least 10 minutes to be acknowledged by any of the staff who would walk right past me. On my first day, I was finally sat and asked about a menu, I was told the buffet was $17.95. So obviously, I was having the buffet. The next morning, I went for breakfast, and after being ignored again, headed for the buffet since it was the only choice. It was then I noticed that other patrons were looking at the breakfast menu. Oh, so I don't have to spend $20 on breakfast everyday? Good to know.
When I tried to go to Botanica for dinner, I was ignored for so long that I decided to go to Vics Steakhouse. The food was really good, but really expensive. The next night, I tried to go to Botanica again, and was ignored again for so long, I went up to my room to order room service. Seeing the Botanica menu again, made me so mad, I went to Vics again, even though the prices were so high.
The whole experience was way overpriced. With the amount spent, I could have stayed at a nicer hotel, with staff who actually care.
