We chose to stay at the Best Western Northgate because it was within walking distance of Nanaimo's only brew pub. The hotel is located in a suburban type area, across from a grocery store and other businesses and not too far from the main island highway. The property appeared to be recently renovated and our room was a good size and clean. Our room faced a four lane road(hidden by foliage) but it was not too noisy. Check in and check out processes were smooth and there was plenty of parking. There was a bar/grill attached, but we did not check it out. The walk to the brew pub was down that same four lane road, which was not conducive to walking, but we made it safely. I would investigate another route or taking a cab. Overall, if you have business in the immediate area, need a place to stop on your way up island, or want to be able to walk to and from the brew pub, it is a good place to stay.
