“Historic Hotel in the Heart of Downtown”

Fairmont Hotel - Vancouver

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is the third Hotel Vancouver in Downtown -- the first two were demolished years ago. I first stayed in the Hotel Vancouver nearly 30 years ago when it was the tallest building around with a great view from the rooftop restaurant. The view these days is less grand since Vancouver has had an explosion of residential condo high-rises throughout Downtown. Despite the diminished view, this is still a fine hotel in a prime location -- close to transit, at one end of the main shopping and strolling street (Robson Street), and near many fine restaurants. The hotel has top-notch public areas and the staff is quite helpful and courteous. Elevator service was good, with secured access to residential floors. Our room was OK. It had an updated but somewhat cramped bathroom, a small TV in a armoire, comfortable beds with good linens, high-speed internet access at $14.95 per 24 hours, and not-so-good sound transmission to the next room. The Globe & Mail newspaper was delivered to the door every morning.

We stayed at this hotel March 30 - April 3, 2007. Our room was on the 7th floor. Both the room and bathroom were quite roomy and comfortable with a king bed that was out of this world (probably the most comfy bed I have ever slept in!).

Breakfast buffet in the hotel was great but pricy - $50 + taxes for 2!

The hotel was in walking distance or next to public transit services. Just a block from busy Robson Street.

The Grand Lady hotel - Hotel Vancouver is part of the Fairmont Chain. We went up to Vancouver for Spring Break weekend. Given the hotel reputation for elegance and refinement, I was nervous about my two kids (ages 9 and 4) staying two nights. I couldn't have been more wrong. During check in in the gorgeous lobby, there is a Thomas the Tank Engine for the kids to climb. What a great distraction. The hotel also provides a welcome kit and coupons for free milk and cookies for the children. To top it off, the hotel has resident dogs (Labs named Mavis and Beau) for people to pet and walk. The dogs sleep/hang out by the concierge. What a wonderful touch. We walked Beau to the Museum Park across the street. Our room was great, two queen beds with high-end linens and down duvet, and terrific pillows. The room was a good size, but the bathroom was small with little counter space. But since it is an old hotel, I wasn't surprised. Great toiletries - lotion, etc. The towels could have been thicker and softer. Two robes were in the room. The pool area has a toddler wading pool that was warm. the regular pool was cold. We splurged on the Sunday buffet brunch ($25/pp CAD). However, kids under 5 are free and they have a reasonably priced ala carte menu. The breakfast was good. All of the staff was friendly and helpful. From previous reviews, we signed up for the loyality club and received points and a free newspaper (delivered in a cloth bag). We got a great price from Victoria Clipper tours - train ride and two nights. We will return!

My most recent trip to the Hotel Vancouver merely confirmed my love for both the hotel and the Fairmont chain. (Not to mention Vancouver). I had been lucky enough to stay there as a fairly young child when, I believe, it was still a Canadian Pacific Hotel.

Before even mentioning the trip, look at the hotel itself. The building is fairy-tale in its appearance. Enough said of its magnificant grandeur.

This particular visit was at the end of ten days skiing in Whistler and a late transfer back to Vancouver. I arrived, slightly bedraggled, having had a good send off in Whistler. The porters jumped into action and made sure that all of my bags (and there were a fair number of them) made it to my room as I was checking in.

The room was spacious and well furnished, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was marble, but still warm. I had booked via Fairmont's Great Rates-Great Dates programme giving me the best value hotel room in the world, one of the benefits of joining the Fairmont President's Club (a must if you intend to stay at any Fairmont hotels). For little more than the price of a night in a Travel Lodge in the UK, I had a corner room with a king-bed, over-looking the cathedral and down Burrard to the bay. This price also included a filling buffet breakfast (much needed ahead of a long day and nine-hour flight) and, of course, first class service.

Also, as a FPC member, when I wished to use the internet to check in online for my flight with British Airways, the staff bent over backwards to arrange it for me, resulting in free use of the business centre (despite having checked out earlier that day).

All in all, a world-class hotel in a world-class city. Definitely one to put on your list.

A very grand hotel with an old colonial feel. Stayed here for 3 nights at the end of skiing holiday in whistler and found it to be very comfortable with great facilities and a fantastic location for shopping and sightseeing.
