This was our finest dining experience in Victoria and it was obvious from the other diners at this small restaurant that the locals favor it also. The host, whose mother called him Matisse because he was a wanna-be painter as a child (unfortunately no talent) does a great job to entice you with the dishes and doesn't disappoint in the quality or presentation. The wines, especially the BC wines, are nicely presented and very reasonably priced. The entrees are delicious and the desserts are magnificent.
Expect to spend at least two hours at dinner. The staff will pace you and not rush you. Very French in that regard. We had the Prix Fix menu, $52 without wine, beginning with lobster bisque, pate, halibut, pork or rabbit, and excellent creme brulee and Grand Marnier bread pudding. Be ready to spend a bit more than usual, but well worth the experience.
Reservations are probably necessary. We booked at least a month before traveling.
