We took our two kids (aged 7 and 6 yo) on a Blackcomb Mountain Safari dusk tour with Canadian Snowmobile (started at 4.30pm) - what fabulous fun we had! We deliberately chose this tour so that we would start the tour driving in daylight hours (we had never driven snowmobiles before), and we wanted to explore the mountain we usually ski whilst still light enough to see.
The tour - our group consisted of 4 mobiles, all of which were occupied by 2 people (i.e. a parent and child passenger); the tour starts with your guide teaching you how to operate the mobiles (only takes 10 mins) and then you are on your way. It took around 1.5 hours to make the trip up the mountain, including stops along the way to sightsee, allow groomers past, and to do some terrain exercises practising steering & braking). We managed to arrive at the Crystal Hut on Blackcomb just as darkness had fallen shortly before 6pm. After a break for delicious soup and hot chocolate, we then drove back down the mountain in complete darkness!
The snowmobiles - whilst I am not a snowmobile expert, the vehicles certainly look new and well maintained, and were extremely comfortable with hand and foot warmers for the drivers. We each carried one of our kids as passenger on the back of our mobiles. They can easily hold on to the back of the mobile, the seat handle or the driver. Just make sure they don't fall asleep - the ride back down can be quite sleep-inducing for a tired little skier at the end of the day!
Clothing - they recommend that you wear your usual ski gear, but they do have plenty of spare outer gear if you need to borrow it, and they do provide everyone with a full face helmet. in general, if you wear your ski gear and goggles you will be fine - remember to wear full finger gloves, not mittens, but if you forget then they will gladly lend you a pair.
The instructors are excellent - helpful, friendly, enthusiastic and encouraging. They give you a run down on how to operate the mobile, and constantly check the group are ok as you make your way up and down the mountain.
The tour itself was fantastic - it was great fun, and wonderful to explore the mountain at this beautiful time of day - surreally quiet, other than the odd towering graders you encounter along the way. We will definitely be doing another tour with Canadian Snowmobile when we return next year!
