“Never again”

Fort Garry Hotel

I stayed at this hotel as part of a polar bear travel package. Stayed there the first and last night of the package and thought is was really pretty bad. The lobby and banquet rooms are very nice. The rooms are in need of some serious updating. Plumbing is old. The worse part was that there is no thermostat in the rooms. I could not sleep because the room was so hot and the windows are sealed shut. I would never stay at the FG again!

“Best Bet in Winnipeg”

Fort Garry Hotel

I have stayed at the Fort Garry several times in the past as well as other hotels in Winnipeg and I've decided that the Fort Garry is my best option while visiting Winnipeg. On this particular trip, our stay at the Fort Garry was very nice and we were very pleased with the cleanliness of the room as well as the service. Front desk staff were friendly and attentive, providing me with all of the information I needed. The valet was very helpful, providing parking tips and even opened my door for me. We took advantage of the free coffee and tea room service as soon as we settled into our room and it was such a nice touch as they even provided fresh baked cookies on the tray. Our room was very quiet and the beds were very comfortable. I slept very well, and that is uncommon for me while sleeping over in a hotel. The next morning we were treated to a very nice free (tip is extra) breakfast that included fresh fruit, assortment of breads, pastries and cheese, cereals, oatmeal, yogurt, omelettes made to order and carving station with baked ham as well as very good coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. With the free breakfast, I believe that the Fort Garry is a great, reliable place to stay in Winnipeg and turns out to be a good value when compared to the other options available in the downtown area.

“Interior needs Updating!”

Fort Garry Hotel

8 Mar 2008

I was so looking forwarded to staying at the FG, as I have always admired the exterior architecture and assumed that the interior of the Hotel would be as magnificent. The foyer remains grand, but as we exited the elevator and headed to our room my stomach dropped. The hallway and "executive" suite was reminiscent of the hotel in the movie "The Shining."

The executive suite, was in fact, 2 rooms that were put together. 1 Room was a sitting room with furniture that resembled a grandmothers garage sale and smelled damp. The bedroom' s furniture was also outdated, but the bed and linens were updated and very comfortable - which saved our 1 night stay. The bathroom had old white tile, old vanity, but the water pressure was good and the toiletries were great (L'Occitane).

Also, the television was reminiscent of the 80's and was fuzzy. It appears that the private owner of the hotel is waiting for a buyer and only updating what is absolutely necessary.

I immediately phoned the front desk to ask if there were rooms available that were updated. She notified me that there were ONLY 2 rooms that had been rennovated w/hardwood, sunk in tub, etc and they were booked. So, if you want to stay at the FG and have a luxurious experience - be sure to specify that you want an updated room or 1 of the 2 updated rooms/Junior Suite. I have a feeling they reserve these rooms for Brides/people who have their weddings at the hotel.

HOWEVER, the SPA is absolutely AMAZING. I am assuming a separate company runs that part of the hotel. It is so worth going to the FG, but maybe stay in a different hotel.

“What an amazing hotel! It's a castle!”

Fort Garry Hotel

26 Feb 2008

Hotel Fort Gary is an amazing historic hotel in downtown Winnipeg. It really is a castle, dating back from the 1900s, when the city was just being built.
The lobby was full of people, live piano music and a foyer lounge called 'The Palm Room'. It feels like a 1920 piano bar (because it is!). The food is fantastic and the service is fast and professional.
Since the hotel is a British design from 1900, the rooms are not big, but they are very nice and clean. The most comfortable beds in the world are features of this hotel. Believe me!
This hotel seems to be a hot spot among locals and many locals were in the lounge and the restaurants. This is always a good sign! Breakfast is a great feature at this hotel. Hot full breakfast, made to order! Nice!
Sundays, the hotel does a wonderful Sunday Brunch from 10a to 2p, which is full of locals. Another good sign.
The hotel doesn't have a pool/hot tub/work out centre IN the building (due to the age of the hotel), however, your room key card gives you free 24h access to those things at Fort Gary Place, the condo tower which is connected to the hotel via sky walk, so it is great.
The hotel is located in south downtown, which is mostly condo towers and resturants. The downtown shopping malls are a bit of a walk, howwbeit in the summer, the 10mins is not bad at all.
Also, just down the street (west) is Osborne Village, and very trendy section of downtown! Full of shops, pubs, eateries and a supermarket.
Public transit is easy to use from this hotel, and the train station is a few blocks away.
We LOVE this hotel!

Enjoyed our stay here. Spent three nites. Two nites on the front end of our Churchill Polar Bear Trip and one nite at the end. The hotel is lovely and historic. Enjoyed having a drink in the lobby bar. We walked across the street for dinner two nites to "The Keg" Steakhouse. Great food! Had a banquet meal at the hotel one nite when we met our tour group. It was okay. The hotels breakfast is wonderful. They have made to order omelets that were excellent. The hotel rooms were a bit tired...since we had two stays here we had two different rooms. Very similar. The carpet could have been a bit cleaner. Maybe it was just worn and faded. The bed linens and mattresses were so comfortable that we slept like babies. The hotel seems like a hot spot for locals too.
