I was in Winnipeg for business and my birthday was yesterday so I figured I deserved a special meal. After some research and some chats with coworkers, I got the recommendation that if I wanted seafood, Orlando's was the place to visit. Well, they were right... but not just for seafood. All their offerings were exquisite!
Their menu is rather short but they really try to customize their offerings to whatever desires the customer has. I told them what I liked and disliked and asked what they recommended and before the words got out of my mouth, he said just try the chef's special. He made sure I was not allergic to anything and immediately got my bread and wine, also his pairing. The bread was warm with a tasty crust and could be dipped into the balsamic oil mixture. The wine was a nice choice but not being very knowledgeable, I couldn't tell how nice...I just liked it. They seemed to have a fairly large variety available for those that know better. The chef's special is 3 appetizers, a salad (either caesar or house), and 5 meat choices with vegetables and pasta.
The appetizers were cold slices of BBQ pork tenderloin with a special wasabi sauce, some large hot shrimp in lobster sauce (called Shrimp Orlando), and a hot stuffed mussel in the half-shell. All were tasty but my favorite was the mussel.
The next course came out shortly after I set my fork down and had a sip of wine. It was their Portugese house salad and was fresh with oil and vinegar. It also had some tomatoes, cucumbers, and beets surrounding the lettuce.
In short order, the main dish was presented. There was a mound of pasta in the middle of the large round plate and surrounded by the 5 meats and 4 vegetable choices. The meats were a stuffed pork loin roll with prociutto and chicken, a broiled filet mignon medallion, orange roughy that was grilled and brushed with olive oil and lemon, some baby halibut (very tender and tasty), and finally a butterflied prawn (which I was told was not farm raised and not available very often). Between each meat choice was a vegetable choice, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and something green (beans or peas in pods, not sure which). All I did was take a bite, turn my plate, and take another bite....each was cooked perfectly and I kept the variety about equal until the very end.
I came here with the desire to get some excellent seafood but was treated to a gourmet meal with an ideal balance of portions and flavors. I can highly recommend each meat choice and have no favorites. Please don't just think of this place as a seafood restaurant, it is much more.
As I neared completion the chef (owner), Arnaldo Carreira, came out to see how things were going and we ended up talking about my home town of Chicago and how he doesn't really try to compete with the big restaurants or go for the least expensive ingredients to offer people. He really enjoys creating an experience for the patrons and that shows in the greeting I got on entering, the clean and upscale white cloth covered tables, the fingerprint free mirrored wall (that makes this small place look larger than it is), and the personal attention with each offering. Because we were chatting a while, they included a dessert wine and some capuccino to top off the meal at no charge.
The meal itself was $35 plus about $8 for my glass of wine with the meal. It was worth every penny and I fully enjoyed my experience. There are other offerings that are less expensive but I wanted the full experience that the chef's special offered. I have no doubt any choice would be a good one here....enjoy!
