“Old City Charm, Moments from the Heart of Down Town Halifax”

Super 8 Dartmouth

An older but charming Hotel , unlike the cookie cutter chains, located in Dartmouth with a veiw for the Halifax skyline. for the price you would not have expected much but you'd be surprized once you check in Very friendly staff helpful in every way. As a local photographer I like to shoot outdoors ( but with the weather in Halifax changing every five minute you just never know) and the home/office suites make a prefect backup plan when setting up a photoshoot. Never had a single problem with the rooms or staff. I would highly recomend this place on any traveller to the city .

Well. The other reviews have it right.

The good. I booked through Hotwire and got a great price. My room was recently renovated and was really great. Colorful and clean. Location near ferry and bus stops were great. Grocery about a half mile north allowed me to get food for the microwave and fridge. Good flat screen TV.

The bad. Parking, charged $5 a day for a dirt lot around the corner and down the street. The place is changing froma HoJo to a Super8 and is gutted on certain floors. Breakfast was horrible to say the least. (But there is a Tim's around the corner.)

The indifferent. The common areas were dim and dreary but quiet. The elevators were turned off late at night and then turned on again after 8 a.m. But I was on the 2nd floor so I took the stairs. The neighborhood is iffy. It seems low income and run down, but was safe, just a little offputting. The large balcony with a view of the bridge was great, but the view of the neighbors back yards a little trashy. But I also had a view of the remote parking area and could watch my car.

Overall, I was neither happy or bothered by my stay here. I loved Halifax, and will return, but I think I'll try one of the three colleges that rent dorm room for $22 a night to seniors over 50.

Like many things in life, this hotel has its good points and its bad points.

GOOD
----
* Inexpensive

* Very convenient location to the ferry that crosses the harbor to Halifax. Travel tip: Take the Halifax harbor ferry on a warm summer night - the view is magical!

* The kitchenette including the refrigerator is nice if you don't want to eat out.

BAD
---
* The hotel's idea of parking is a very cramped area in the basement of the building. I had difficulty maneuvering a midsize rental car into the spot -- if you have a van or SUV parking will be a big challenge.

* Allow extra time if you have to get to the Halifax airport in the morning. Traffic around the hotel can be a problem.

“don't sweat the small stuff”

My husband and I chose this hotel because of location. One block up from Alderney landing and ferry to Halifax. We knew it was an older hotel so it did not surprise us to have slight disappointment on a couple of things. First when I booked, I had asked for a higher floor and queen bed. We received a 2nd floor room which only had a double bed. We decided not to complain as we were not going to be in the room much. The curtains were very thin and did not block out the light in the morning, such a shame ( sleeping in would have been a treat )as this hotel has a check out of 1pm which we liked very much. The room itself was in need of painting . The bed was comfortable, AC worked well, there was an extra blanket and pillow. It had a fridge( we used ) and stove, coffee maker and dishes. Free morning paper. Bathroom again very tired but clean, toilet cover was missing and no fan. Slight sulfer smell from the sink drain. Did have hair dryer but did not use. Nice towels. Patio overlooked the street at the front but double slidding doors kept the room quiet. Locks worked well. Good security door at front desk and friendly staff. Large sitting area on 2nd floor but not many chairs. Nice seating in front of lobby. Parking was on side street from hotel but had steps to back of hotel. Not very secure and not easy for elderly. Overall an O.K. hotel for the price. Would ask to see the room before getting keys next time but will probably use again. Tim Hortons close by . Very good Revana's pizza nearby with patio tables outside Whiskey's. Good hotel for easy going people.

I think this is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at - we booked through Hotwire, so didn't know what we were getting... we booked 2 adults, 2 children. We were late arriving and found ourselves in a room with one bed - they did move us. But the best way to describe this place is a "dump" - cough up another couple of dollars (if that) and stay anywheere else.
