I have fairly high expectations from Hampton Inns. Everything should be right. With this one, the problems were in the details.
Although the room/towels/sheets were clean, some of the towels had threads coming off the edges. The hair dryer cord in the bathroom had some nasty dried goo on it. Especially disgusting since the cord hangs down right onto the facial tissue dispenser.
The first day, I found that the shower drain was really slow. I hate showering with my feet in a pool of soapy drain water. On the plus side, the drain was fixed after I mentioned the problem to the front desk. On the minus side, I think this problem would have been uncovered previously by the cleaning staff if the tub were getting a proper cleaning in the first place.
The hotel has no business center (a surprise). Front desk staff were rarely at the counter, they were always hiding in the back room. The breakfast was not very fresh, selection was mediocre, the floors in the dining room were sticky (and they have the nerve to put a tip jar in there!).
Moving on to the positive:
The best thing was the shuttle bus service. The hotel is located up near the Niagara whirlpool (walking distance), so the main falls are not within walking distance. The hotel has a shuttle service shared with the sister hotel Hilton. It leaves the Hampton North every hour up until 11PM. I took several trips on the shuttle and all problem-free. The shuttle is free (there is a tip jar).
I think Hampton Inns in general might be getting full of themselves. Now there are brochures in the rooms selling Hampton Inn branded products. My past experiences with the chain have been great. I haven't stayed at one in the last few years due to higher pricing, though. Now, I finally do stay at one and I am less impressed than in the old days. Charging more, giving less, and trying to upsell me additional merchandise. The Hampton name may have lost its luster with me.
I would stay here again, but only for the free shuttle service.
