This particular Days Inn is relatively new. I'ts a no frills establishment in a good location.
We were well aware that we were not going to get the same amenities as the Hilton or of the like, but we did expect some level of satisfaction and at best, a good nights sleep. We received neither. It was quite simply, the worst hotel stay in my life.
Visiting the Niagara region in January allows for great rates and low traffic volumes. Considering we would be checking in late and leaving early, dictated that we could save a few dollars for just the sake of a place to sleep. When booking, we were told that the Fallsview casino was "just across the street", when in fact it was about 3 blocks away. A little misleading, especially if you were eldery or handicapped.
Upon arrival, we were told we would have to pay a fee of $12 to park the car in a relatively empty parking lot. We parked in the adjacent Perkins parking lot, which was not signed nor indicated there were parking terms and conditions.
We checked into our room of bare bones basics - clean, but shoddily furnished with dated headboards, bedspreads and furniture. There were no shampoos, lotions, tissue boxes, thin small bath towels, liimited cable television of approximately 8 channels and those hateful, environmentally unfriendly styrofoam cups wrapped in plastic. Ugh.
Fine, we thought. It's all part and parcel of the budget hotel mantra. When in our room at around 9pm, there were a number of guests that congregated down the hallway. Even though they were about 50 feet away, we could hear them like they were right in our room! It was a little annoying so we left for a few hours. We returned by midnight to sleep. A half hour later the large group of people returned and continued to converse in the hallway, this time right infront of our door. This went on for about an hour until I went to our door and knocked on it from the inside to indicated that we were all too well aware of the noise. They moved down the hall and some into their rooms which one was unfortunately the adjoining room to ours.
At around 2am, my husband and I were trying to find solutions. We shoved the bedspreads and towels underneath the cracks of the door and adjoining room door to muffle the noise but to no avail. The echo and sound that travelled through the paper thin walls and door frames was amazing.
By 3am, we called the front desk and asked if something could be done. Securtiy went to talk to the guests and while I suspect they were considerate enough to keep it down, even talking at a normal volume was coming right into our room. By 3:30am we asked to be moved. The hotel obliged.
At 3:45am,we had to get out of bed, change, pack and relocate. We were put on the second floor, which was completely vacant and freshly painted. Upon entering our room, we were blasted by sub-zero temperatures from the air conditioner blowing at full tilt. Huddled under the curtain over the heater is where we were for 20 minutes until getting into our freezing cold beds. Needless to say, my husband woke with a cold with only two hours sleep, which was two more than what I got.
I went to the front desk in the morning and voiced my concerns. I also mentioned that I was not in any position to pay for my nights stay as it was completely unsatisfactory. The front desk person asked if I had breakfast. I said no, confused at the question. Proudly, he offered me free parking and breakfast for my troubles. I told him that that was unacceptable. He said he could not do anything else. I requested to speak with his supervisor. He said that he would let me know.
We realize that it wasn't the fault of the hotel staff, nor even the fault of the other guests to an extent, but moreover the substandard engineering and construction of the hotel.
We hope that this particular establishment will take measure to improve on sound proofing their hotel and adhere to their mission statement of:
"As our guest, you can expect warm hospitality and clean, comfortable rooms where everything works, to make your stay trouble-free and enjoyable. We work hard to earn our reputation as "The Best Value Under the Sun."
