We stayed here for one night Fri-Sat. This was our 3rd visit here with our girls, 4 and 6 year olds. Our previous 2nd visit was interrupted by a hotel fire. The resort compensated us very well for the disruption by giving us our money back from our 2nd stay and also giving us a free night's stay to be used within a year. Our free stay was for a Family Suite.
When we arrived on a Friday afternoon, around 1:30, there was absolutely nobody in line at check-in. I was thrilled already. The lady who checked us in was so nice. My 6 year old drew a picture to give to the hotel and I gave it to the lady explaining how excited my girls were to be here that she drew a picture for the people at the hotel. Well, they made such a big fuss and claimed to be so happy to receive the drawing it really made my daughter's day. The lady even gave my girls a bunch of tokens (maybe 25 each) for their arcade. I was just happy that we were able to get into our room at 1:30. We were assigned to a room on the 2nd floor (main floor of the lodge).
Our room was near the end of the long hall, a long walk, but at least it's quieter (less traffic walking by). We had trouble opening our door with our wrist bands as we forgot how to trigger it. A really nice room attendant who was working just down the hall made the effort to come by to show us how to open it (you have to position to picture of the Wolf on the band to the lights on the door handle!). When we opened the door to our room, we were pleasantly surprised. The first thing my daughter noticed was the fireplace in the corner of the room. The next thing we noticed were the TWO TVs in the room. This was NOT a Family Suite!!! They upgraded us to a Fireplace suite! It was so much bigger than the regular Family suite with a full bath (the sink is in the same room as the tub and toilet). In the regular Family suite, the sink is in the main living area and the tub and toilet are in the small bathroom, making it very tight in here. The carpet was quite clean and didn't look worn at all for a 2 year old hotel. The double beds were comfy. We made good use out of the microwave, fridge, safe, both TVs, and fireplace. Also the balcony in the fireplace suites are twice as big as balconies in the family suites. My 4 year old spotted 2 beautiful deer grazing in the grass outside our room from the balcony.
For dining, my husband did leave the resort to pick up Kentucky Fried Chicken for dinner (my girls' favourite fast food) and he brought it back to our room to enjoy. He went to a really close by Tim Hortons for breakfast the next morning. We have eaten at the resort's restaurant for their buffet dinner, and we didn't enjoy it at all (kids 3 and under eat free though). Thus the take-out. We did buy a snack at the waterpark snack shop. $15 for nachos and 2 frozen lemonades.
I packed along our laptop with wireless card to connect to the lodge's FREE Wi Fi internet service. I made good use of the laptop and internet at night while the girls were sleeping.
My girls made a trip to the Cub Club. We didn't do any of the crafts that required a fee, but they offered some free activities according to the activity planner. The girls just did some painting on free colouring sheets they had out.
The Northern Lights arcade was loud (they really blast that music!) with lots of games. However, there were not too many for the very young set (like those at Chuck E Cheese), but my girls found a couple things they enjoyed. We earned enough tickets from our free tokens to purchase a few things at their prize counter. We were even 3 tickets short for an item, but the guy gave it to us anyways which was nice.
The waterpark: I found the water to be quite cold, which made it hard for me to enjoy. Yes, I did get used to it after a while, but still, it was COLD! There seemed to be an older crowd this visit (kids 10+) so the line ups for the slides were long (all the way down the stairs which was new to me. Previously I always walked right onto slide. The tiny towels they give us is pathetic. I always bring a couple of larger towels from home to use. I asked for 4 towels once (one for each of us in the family) and then my husband asked for 2 more and the lady actually had the nerve to say that their towel policy is 1 per person! My husband still took the 2 extra towels. I noticed they replaced all their tubes to newer ones since last June. I was a little disappointed when we returned Fri night and they closed down all the tube rides for an hour (until 8:10). With my 2 young ones, who could wait that long??? The hottub was so nice, especially after being in the cold pool water. But it got crowded with kids, babies, adults.
They have Story Time in the lobby at 8:00 every night. Lots of kids come in their jammies and sit on the floor in front of the interactive character display. Wiley the Wolf came by for a visit too. They seem to love reading Robert Munsch stories (they read Robert Munsch the last time we were there too!) Tonight's story was Smelly Socks and since my girls have heard that story many times, we left after a bit to walk around the gift shop and made our obligatory vacation purchases.
Check out was fast and efficient too. We made a last minute purchase that wasn't on our bill that was delived to us during the night. So we wanted to make sure it was all covered and accurate and did not use the express check out.
Really enjoyed this stay. Staff were all friendly, room was clean, waterpark area was enjoyed. The only con is the noise level. But what do you expect when you go to a resort that is geared towards families and children? I heard children yelling, talking, running, slamming doors in the hallways, and in the room beside ours until after 11:00. But how can you complain about that? It was definitely nice and quiet though during the important sleep hours. Thank goodness my girls can can fall asleep and stay that way even with all that noise going on.
Will most definitely come back. My 4 year old was in tears because we had to leave. To me, that's a sign of a great family vacation!
