We pulled up to the hotel and seriously considered canceling our reservation without ever setting foot inside. The exterior gives the feel of a 1970's roadside motel, and the parking is very cramped. We were relieved, however, when we went inside and found a modern lobby and friendly staff.

Good points:

The suites are very spacious, literally two full-size rooms, two bathrooms, and a well-equipped kitchenette. The beds and pillows were very comfortable, and while the room's decor was dated, everything in the room was pretty clean. The front desk staff were great and quite on top of things. The pool was wonderful, and was one of the few pools on our trip that was actually heated to a comfortable temperature. The sauna looked very inviting as well, but with small kids in tow, we opted to skip it. The continental breakfast was good, with toast, bagels, pastries, muffins, cereal, yogurt, juice, coffee, and a nice selection of teas. I found the room rate to be reasonable for what we had; having said that, we were on a discounted rate.

The downside:

The 'fitness center' is a few exercise machines that look about 20 years old - they probably work fine, but don't expect anything modern. The second floor is both smoking and non-smoking, and there is a terrible air freshener installed somewhere near the elevator which is located in the middle between the two sections. Which means the air when you first step off the elevator is just terrible, and the air in the entire non-smoking section of the second floor smells stale. The kitchenette was functional, but dated, and many of the dishes were worn or chipped. As well, we didn't discover until the next morning that the fridge was actually turned off, so we ended up discarding a few perishables.

This hotel is big - much bigger than it looks from the street. Be prepared for a long walk down a narrow hallway to get to your room!

If I were in the area and needed a room, I would probably stay here again. Suggestions for visitors - if you are scent-sensitive, ask to see the room before I accepted it, to make sure it wasn't a non-smoking room on a smoking floor. And if you plan to use the kitchenette, make sure everything is turned on!!

We stayed at this hotel for only one night on a recent trip to Thunder Bay, Ontario. The room was shabby, pokey, and none too clean. There was a door leading to a balcony that could not be opened nor were we able to open the window. Believe me, we tried in order to alleviate the mustiness in the room. The furniture was old, beaten, and tired. The upholstered chairs were disgustingly stained to the point that I draped a towel over one in order to sit down (on the plus side - bed and bath linens were clean and fresh). The bathroom was clean enough, but again it was very worn. There was no internet service available in our room. We did check the room for insects. None were visible. There was a continental breakfast buffet offered in the morning - we declined. For what was spent on our however brief stay (over $100.00), we would not recommend this facility to anyone in it's current condition.

The hotel's staff was great and it is a short walk to the train station (which has tons of free parking) if you wanted to drive. The hotel is 70's vintage and well worn and in bad need of an complete overhaul. The street in front is busy until late - bring ear plugs. The room was clean, but worn. The breakfast is OK with good coffee. There is a sauna, but no whirlpool. I would say the place is at least 25% overpriced for the comforts you get. If you're heading to Mackinaw City after the train ride, proceed there right after the train and find a nice place for much less.

This Is the second time I have stayed here, 2 nights in 2003 and 2 nights in July 2009.
The hotel looks like it has been completely renovated. New paint, new Bathrooms, new carpet and some new furniture. I stayed with 2 teenagers and the pool and weight room kept them occupied in the evenings. The balcony was wonderful, we had a back room so the view wasn't anything special but it provided a place to get away from the kids. The location is great, within walking distance of restaurants, shopping , the train ride, Casino, Essar centre, and the museums. The staff were wonderful. I am an early bird, and went down t the lobby at 4:00 am ,the front desk person was wonderful, She made a fresh pot of coffee and we chatted a bit, she said there is another renovation due in 2 years. The continental breakfast was fine, bagels, toast, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, pasterie and muffins, juice, milk , coffee and tea, Nothing fancy but since it was included , who could complain. For the price, I would say this is a great Motel.

Some of the other reviews must be talking about some other hotel. This hotel is at least average/ or more in every catagory. We were impressed by the friendliness and cordiality of the front desk staff. The restaurant is a bit dark, but it looks like every Pub in England, Scotland and Ireland that I have visited. We ate there twice and were happy with the "Pub grub." Our prime reason for picking this site was its nearness to the train station. If we were to come again we would certainly stay here. We were happy with our surroundings, we slept well and we enjoyed all this at a reasonable cost. What more should anyone expect?
