Was in Toronto for gay pride, visiting from Chicago, and we ended up at the Fairmont. Our original intention was to visit only from Friday to Sunday, but we decided to extend our stay a day, and instead of staying at the Fairmont, we moved further north to the Marriott, which we both ended up preferring.
Our flight from Chicago was severely delayed, so we arrived very late. When we arrived, based on what I had read online, I requested a renovated room. They ended up putting us in a supposedly renovated room on the third floor.
Now, this is an old hotel - so if you like the historical aspect of the places at which you stay, you may appreciate what this hotel brings to the table. Vintage... ornate... Our "renovated" room had fixtures in the bathroom literally falling off the wall - there was a hole in the marble that was sort of half covered up with a plastic electrical cover that was screwed in. Considering that this was supposedly recently renovated, it seemed odd that the wallpaper was peeling in the bathroom. The shower was fine - the bathroom was very small, as was the room. The bed was comfortable enough - on the third floor, there isn't much of a view, but I suppose I was willing to make a sacrifice for a "renovated" room, as like I said, some people online have said they've needed to change rooms several times from the non-renovated ones.
As for service, I would put it at about average. I would just expect a little more from this hotel. The bellmen we encountered there were all very nice and very attentive, but I don't think there were enough of them. When we arrived, admittedly very late, there was nobody to hail a cab for us - we eventually just went out into the street and pulled one over - not that this is at all really that bothersome. I opted just to let the computer check me out, since the line when we left for the front desk was out of control.
In all, the hotel was fine. The location cannot be beat. So for location alone, this hotel gets major points. This was my first time at a Fairmont, so maybe I was expecting more. I wouldn't stay here again - the room was fine, but just not worth the price, and I know there are more comfortable options available. As I mentioned, for our last night, we moved to the Marriott, which we both preferred.
Definitely ask for a renovated room, and if possible, get a high floor.
