Where do I start with this review. I don't have anything good to say. I had booked a trip with ebookers who recommended this hotel over another one. We stayed in the other hotel for one night and moved to this hotel for 4 nights.

First impressions were dull. Checked in to our room, which was just vile. The room stank. The carpet was dirty. The ceiling was stained. The view out the window was of nothing but a crane and a demolished building. I rang down to reception immediately and told them I just couldn't stay there. They told me I could upgrade for x number of dollars to a better room. I told them I just wanted a different room. Our new room wasn't going to be ready for 5 hours (check-in apparently was 4pm, even though we had been told by ebookers it was 11am). The concierge was very keen to get us out of the hotel for the day so sent us off on a trip to the Niagra Falls which didn't have us back until midnight. I had intended going to the Niagra Falls but I would have preferred to have planned it for a day that I wanted to go rather than feeling I was pushed in to going.

The new room was marginally better. It was a corner room with 2 windows so was bright and didn't smell! We still had a crane outside this window...obviously a lot of building work going on around!

The hotel was undergoing renovations so the drilling started at 8am. I don't enjoy being woken in such a manner when I'm on holidays. If I had known it was under renovation when booking, I wouldn't have booked it as I was on a break and wanted to get up at my own pace in the morning, not to have to jump out of bed because I couldn't stand the noise any more.

The restaurant was awful. We were the only people eating in it one evening and even at that, the staff didn't pay any attention to us and took a long time to clear our plates.

We then had the pleasure of the fire alarm going off at 6am one morning. I was awoken by a noise I couldn't put my finger on which seemed to go on forever. Eventually I tried to ring down to reception - no reply. Rang conciereg - no reply. I would say that this alarm had been going off for 5 if not 10 minutes when eventually a message was played asking everyone to evacuate the building, the fire alarm had been sounded on the 10th floor. Being on the 14th floor, it wasn't too pleasurable running down the stairs half asleep. We no sooner gathered outside when we were told we could now go back in to the hotel. No explanation was given by the staff. People asked if they could have coffee or a breakfast and they were told that those facilites weren't available. The lifts were also out as a precaution because of the fire alarm. We therefore had to turn around and walk back up those 14 flights again.

I did not find the staff in any way friendly.

The best part of my stay in this hotel was checking out!!

I complained to ebookers when I came home. The hotel made no apologies whatsoever for all my complaints. I had mentioned the fire alarm in my complaint (which wasn't necessarily their fault but it was just the icing on the cake for me). Their response was that at least I could see that there was a good system in place responding to the alarm being activated.

I most certainly wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.

“Best Holiday Inn I've stayed in”

Holiday Inn on King

24 Jun 2008

All the staff we encountered could not do enough for us, nothing was too much trouble. The room was super, very comfortable, nice bathroom, brilliant shower. I have stayed in many Holiday Inn's but this has to be the best yet.

“Great location - Room sharing beware”

Holiday Inn on King

We have just returned from a 7-night stay at the Holiday Inn on King. To keep it simple I thought it best to state the Pro's and Con's with this hotel. Here goes:

Pros
- Location. You are within easy walking distance of some great bars and restaurants from the tasteful to the tacky. Gabby's and Gretzky's bar were our favourites with quick service and good looking women. Result!

The CN Tower is only a few blocks away, so is the Roger's sports centre and several good local brewery tours. The Steamwhistle brewery tour was great, especially as the free samples kept on coming for over an hour. The waterfront is within a 15-20 minute walk and the nearest subway station is only a couple of blocks. Also their are plenty of shops and the nearest mall is only a 10-15 minute walk away.

- TV in Room. Can't fault the TV in the room, all 40" of it.

- Beds. Big comfy beds, which are always handy after a long day in the bar.

- Cleanliness. Room was kept quite clean and the rest of the hotel was kept clean also.

- Air Conditioning. Was easily changed and kept the room cool. Great!

- Staff. Their was always someone on duty who could help with dinner reservations and local sightseeing tours. Bar staff were also very helpful and 'chatty'

- Taxis. You can always get a Taxi straight out of the main hotel doors and really anywhere in Toronto. This may sound trivial for Toronto users, but I have been to London & New York and taxis are like gold-dust.

Cons

- Bathroom- I know other reviewers have mentioned this and everyone has their own opinions, but the large frosted glass door and frosted glass window overlooking the bedroom was a problem. To see the blurred outline of anyone while they are on the 'thone' is not really acceptable. Also in the middle of the night when you switch the light on, it illuminates the whole room and wakes the other room user up. At first I thought it was a Police helicopter search light it was that bright. For single room users this is not a problem, but when sharing this can (DID) cause issues.

As these are newly renovated rooms the question is "Why have they done this?". Perhaps the interior designer fancied a laugh when he thought of thousands of room users saying to each other "Can you put on a face mask as I'm going to use the toilet".

- Room Doors - Again, stated by other reviewers, the room doors do make a noise when closing, but then again so do 90% of hotel rooms. It is the locking key mechanism that makes the noise, not the actual door slamming. It was acceptable but some light sleepers may be woken by this.

The Holiday Inn on King is a good base in the heart of Toronto, which is also relatively cheap. I would stay here again, however with a room on my own

“Great location, but hard to sleep due to noise WITHIN the hotel!”

Holiday Inn on King

5 May 2008

The hotel is in a great location. The staff is friendly for the most part. If you go, bring your ear plugs. I read reviews, but did not believe the statements about the noise until I got there. Street noise would be fine due to the location, but he noisy doors in the hotel (I think it is the key section that slams on every door) echo down the halls. It was extremely hard to sleep.

“Big, Quiet, Comfortable Room”

Holiday Inn on King

30 Apr 2008

I stayed here with my partner, and friends when seeing a show downtown. The room was pricey for us, but the location couldnt get any better, and you get what you pay for. It completed our getaway for the show, dinner, and overnight accomodations. The hotel is in a prime location, walking distance to the theatre, and the restaurant we had dinner reservations at. We didn't spend a lot of time in our room, we arrived late at night and left first thing in the morning. I would have liked to enjoy the room more than we did, but it was very comfortable and I enjoyed the time we spent there.
