It's the long weekend harolding the end of summer and we decided to do a staycation in the city. I had stayed at the Westin just over a year ago and had a wonderful experience, this stay wasn't the case. First problem was at check-in, I had made my reservation months ago because they had an amazing promotion, $100/night! It wasn't explained to me that it was a prepaid deal and beacuse I don't deal with credit cards, I had to pay up front and put a $200 deposit down. Second problem at check-in, they claim they are pet friendly, they aren't! They make you sign a ridiculous contract stating a bunch of NO's, like you can't leave your dog alone in the room, how are you supposed to go eat?? Oh wait, they want you to stay in your room the entire stay and pay out the nose for horrible food from room service!! Third problem, going for brunch I called guest services and asked what am I supposed to do in this situation and her reply was "it's your choice to leave the dog in the room", so we did. My partner rushed through his brunch to get back to the room, but that didn't matter, my dog had barked a few times and someone complained. So in the middle of my meal I get a phone call from security, at this time my partner was in the elevator going up to the room! The second time we went for brunch we took Ludo with us and we were going to tye him to the stairs just outside the restaurant, we weren't allowed to do that, so another meal ruined. The food and beverage manager Steve was awesome and totally understanding(being a dog owner himself he understood our frustration), he gave us brunch on the house and gave my partner free room service so he could stay with Luds. If you're gonna call yourself a "dog friendly hotel" then be completely dog friendly or not, don't walk the fence! Now for the biggest problem of all! I am a federally licsensed medical Cannabis user, I asked for a terrace room specifically because of this. Every time I stay at a hotel I explain this to check-in and ask what their polices regarding Cannabis are. Both stays at the Westin I have said this and both times the response was the same, "I'm just gonna pretend like I didn't hear that.". I was medicating on the terrace with my Mother and another friend(all of whom are exemptees as well) when there was a knock at the door, it was 2 big burly security guards there to tell me that there had been a complaint and they have to charge me with the smoking clean up fee and that I would have to deal with management to figure it out. The front desk manager called the room and we talked for sometime, his ignorance was appaling concerning his own rights and the laws governing this country! My friend talked to him as well and he agreed to take $100 off the fee, that was a joke! Almost every single person/s that had a terrace suite was out smoking cigarettes! Did I call and complain about that, NO, I'm not a tattle-taler, but did bring it to their attention after picking on me. The worst comes with his sugestion, "go outside down to the street and medicate there", they are willing to put me in danger! Medicating on the street puts me in a dangerous situation of potientally being robbed and harassed by passer-bys and police! I am sick and going all the way outside the hotel on the street defeats the purpose of me medicating! I asked if I was to comply with his suggestion could he guarantee my safety by providing me with a security guard everytime I was to go outside and his answer was a blunt "No". Check-out was a complete nightmare, talked to the quest experience person and explained what happened and her ignorance was disgusting as well, I then talked to the front desk manager from the night before in person this time and I was refusing to pay even the $100 fine beacuse I didn't smoke tobacco in the room or on the terrace, but because I had to pay a cash deposit it didn't matter they took the $ without my consent! I have never felt so discriminated against in all my life! The Medical Cannabis Access Division has been around for over a decade and for a hotel such as The Westin to not have polices on how to deal with MMAR patients is embarassing and sad. I paid to have a relaxing time away from home, but what I got was a big head ache and an upset stomach from dealing with this crap all weekend, next time I'm gonna keep my hard earned dollars in my pocket!!

Dear Chelsea F,

Thank you for posting your comments.
Please note that existing Marijuana Medical Access Regulations, which came into force in 2001, do not stipulate where patients can use their marijuana. Users must abide by any federal or provincial legislation and local bylaws that restrict smoking cigarettes in public places, but there are no other specific prohibitions on medical marijuana use in public.
Provincial and local bylaws prohibit any guests from smoking on the premises, including your guest room, balcony and/or terrace. We sincerely apologize that our front desk associate made the statement they did, rather than taking the opportunity to clearly explain the Breathe Westin smoke-free policy.
