“Great place to stay”

Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Toronto - Yorkville

Looked around for an affordable hotel in downtown Toronto and was really pleased with this place. It was clean, and in one of the best neighbourhoods in Toronto. The Royal Ontario Museum is steps away, as are great and affordable restaurants and the Metro/Subway is a block away. The beds were comfortable, neighbourhood was quiet at night, very friendly staff, and free wireless internet. I'd stay again in a heartbeat!

We arrived to toronto ( I had booked the Royal York, Fairmont)
to learn that my travel agent had booked the wrong night.
There was absolutely NOTHING else in Toronto ( the concierge at the Fairmont was kind enough to phone everyone in the city)
because of some Boston Redsocks game here in town.
The Fairmont had to sadly turn us away but found us the last room in town at the Howard Johnsons in Yorkville.
I don't know what star rating this has but the hotel was disgusting. A one star at best.
Lets start with the Free breakfast which consisted of a muffin and tiny little coffee cups. Thats it!!
Then lets get to the room.
We had a king room which was huge, but everything was dirty, the bed was hard and the pillows were old foam.
The sheets were old, and crappy.
The bathroom was dingy, tiny and the towels were at least 5 years old, thin and threadbare.
The carpets were filthy needed to be restretched ( were wavy ) and should have been cleaned years ago. I mean drink spills everywhere.
The drapes didnt even cover the windows entirely and were dirty and patched with tape. The windows were filthy.
The hall ways were filthy. The whole place needs a total facelift. And they gouged us for 199 bucks for all this charm.
The Fairmont ( had my damn agent booked it right) was only 30 bucks more.
Anyway, avoid the Howard Johnson at all costs.
It is a total DUMP.

“Well recommended”

Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Toronto - Yorkville

4 of us stayed here for 3 nights in July 2007. We stayed in a family room which had a very small bathroom. Very quiet part of town in Yorkville. No problems with noise, we didn’t hear anyone talking in the room next door nor did we hear any noise on the street. I think we were facing a block of private apartments. Free breakfast of croissants and muffins provided which you could sit and eat at the dining table in the lobby area. One problem when checking in – the front desk staff almost gave us someone else’s room which was very confusing to us, even though we had our own reservation for the family room. We later found out that it was the manager. To this day we are still confused as to why we almost ended up sharing a room with a total stranger. But it was all sorted out in the end and the accommodation is good. Well recommended for anyone.

“Good location - the only thing going for it”

Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Toronto - Yorkville

Disappointing hotel - looks like it hasn't been renovated in 20 years. Cleanliness was not good. Definitely wouldn't stay there again. However location was good and it was reasonably priced - so if you are prepared to comprise then it will be fine.

Stayed at this hotel Friday and Saturday night. It is a bargain for the area. This area seems to be pretty upscale, with Whole Foods and lots of shopping close by. When I booked I tried more expensive hotels but they were just out of my price range for a summer weekend.
The bathroom looked recently renovated, and the room was very clean. Some small things like peeling wallpaper and very country decor but overall a nice hotel. The worst part is I got a room facing a busy street. The noise on a Friday night was unbearable. Think loud motorcycles, ambulances, buses, etc. If you are a late night person this won't bother you but I like to retire early. If noise is an issue request a room away from the street. The could not switch my room when I asked, they said they were booked solid. They have free muffins and coffee in the morning (I skipped it whole foods cafe was much better) and the staff is friendly - when you can get their attention they seemed swamped most times. Also this is walking distance to the subway.
