Talk to anyone in the Beaches of Toronto and they have all heard of Whitlock's, even those not from the Beaches might know of the place. On Sunday they have a good breaky brunch and the place is always packed during that time. I have been here a few times in the past.
We decided to sit on the patio. The tables on the patio had some type of white coloured cheap-style covering. It was disappointing that the server didn't clean the table as we sat down; due to the colour of the covering it was very obvious that there was street dust/dirt on the table.
The service was remarkably terrible. It is customary for Whitlock's to serve free bread with a side of olive oil and balsamic. After we ordered the oil and balsamic was placed on our table but the bread never made an appearance while other tables were being served their bread. One of us ordered Bruschetta, it came before the bread did! In fact, we had to ask for the bread.
So, the Bruschetta came. Often when your order bruschetta the tomato topping comes on the bread and not in a dish on the side; that was weird.
It was about five to eight minutes after the Bruschetta was served that main courses were served. Obviously, the Bruschetta appetizer was not finished. It was absolutely ridiculous having the mains served while one of us was still eating the appetizer.
Even though the service was terrible, I have to say that the food was very tasty. In fact, the food was good enough to forgive the service. However, it isn't that forgiving; you won't find me back to Whitlock's any time soon just for that reason - they need to do something about that because they are loosing their customers as result of their service.
