“Charmed by this hotel - particularly good for families”

Hotel Palace Royal

1 Apr 2008

I was very pleasantly surprised by this hotel. I remember at the time when I was searching for a hotel wanting something trendy, sophisticated like the St. Germain, but they were booked up at the time. Finally the good reviews lured me to this hotel, although it looked like I was not going to get the sophistication of the St. Germain. However, I was not let down at all. The design, the style of the decoration is not the same trendy, Zen-like decor that I tend to lean towards (like Hotel Nelligan in Montreal) however, it is perfectly lovely in its right, a more grand style, lots of brocades, silky fabrics, elaborate window treatments.

Arrival: seamless - there is a place to drive your car right up to the door and the valet takes care of everything, and parks your car. Reception was very smooth. There is a tourist information centre with everything you could need to know about your stay in Quebec City. The lobby is decorated in a grand style, very nice.

Room: we had a lovely family suite on one of the top floors, which we got a very good rate for, including breakfast. The room was lovely, clean, beautifully decorated, the furnishings were in good shape, not 'tired' like some hotels that have more traditional decors. The suite had two rooms, one with two queen size beds and a television; two french doors opened onto a little salon with a sofa, chair, desk, another tv. Everything was very comfortable and we had a nice view. I did not book a pool/atrium facing room because I had read somewhere that there is a strong chlorine smell but I did not find this to be the case. If I return I might book a pool facing room in order to relax on the balcony with my coffee in the morning.

Pool: there is an atrium with a pool which is absolutely lovely. We used the pool in the morning, it was very relaxing.

Restaurant: Initially I had wanted to go to Laurie Raphael which is one of Quebec's premiere restaurants, but decided not to go because I didn't feel it was terribly appropriate for our 7 year old boy. So we ate at the hotel restaurant. We were very happy with this restaurant. Lovely decor, again, in a more traditional style, nice banquettes, a nice atmosphere for a family meal or a romantic dinner. The food was fantastic, the service terrific. They had a child's menu and placemat which assured us that they were welcoming to children.

Location: we felt that we were well located, not far from the good shopping and strolling.

All in all, this was a lovely experience and I would not hesitate to recommend it or to go back myself.

We stayed at the Palace Royale during the 2008 Pee Wee Tournament. We had a family suite with 2 queen beds and a pull-out sofa...very comfortable. Our room overlooked the Place Hydro-Quebec skating rink which was a big hit with the kids. The rink is open all winter (no charge to skate) and during Carnivale, there is music and strobe lights late into the night . The area around the hotel is very clean and we were comfortable letting our teenage kids walk around. The garage is heated...a really bonus on those cold mornings and the highway entrance is just a block away. The hotel is just a few minutes walk from the Old City where you will find many restaurants and shops. The hotel pool and hot tub were very clean and the hotel atrium was beautiful. Each floor had a small balcony overlooking the pool that served as a meeting place for the hockey parents. There was also a lounge area overlooking the pool on the third floor.

One side trip that we took that I would highly recommend if you visit in the winter is Valcartier. It is a snow tubing park about a half hour from the hotel . The park is open from 10 am -10 pm and the kids and adults in our group had a blast!

The hotel location was also very convenient for the Pee Wee tournament-all rinks we played in were only 15-20 minutes away.

My husband and our 2 daughters (early 20's) stayed here 12/26-12/30. Location is perfect for walking the city and seeing the sights. Hotel was friendly/clean. We only ate breakfast there one morning, and while I've had better eggs, most other items were just fine. Staff was friendly (embrace THEIR culture--your in THEIR country-- and you'll be fine). We will definately return to Quebec City, and this hotel for the cleanliness and convenience. There was ice skating right out the back door, and a great deal of options for shopping and dining. Pool and hot tub were well maintained. Only complaint is the game room, which the girls wanted to hit for air hockey and billiards closed a bit early most nights. For families w/ young children, they have a small movie theatre and show movies nightly.

“One of the most beautiful hotels i've ever been too”

This hotel was absouloutely exquisite. The lobby and rooms were both equally stunning, it really blew my mind. Defenitly reflects the luxurity and culture of quebec city. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and the bathroom was really nice. The view was great also, it showed all the old beautiful buildings of the city. The breakfast downstairs was so yummy, millions of items to chose from. The enviroment of the restaurant was gorgeous too. The only thing i didn't really like was the service, but i'm sure we just had a bad employee. Awesome hotel overall, have to stay there when you visit Quebec City!

“Poor Level of Service”

Hotel Palace Royal

3 Dec 2007
4/5 found this review helpful

I am writing to complain about the level of service provided by the Hotel Palace Royal. On Tuesday, September 11, 2007, I reserved 4 rooms from Sunday, October 28, to about Wednesday, October 31. Later that same day, I telephoned 1-800-567-5276 and cancelled the reservation as I found other accommodations.
When I returned from my trip, I received a message stating that I would be charged for at least one night's stay for each of the rooms totalling more than $700. I took on good faith that the reservation would be cancelled on Tuesday, September 11, and didn't record the cancellation number.
I have been trying for the last month to resolve this matter, and was told this morning that 'there's nothing we can do'. If this is the level of service the Hotel Palace Royal provides, then I will do business elsewhere.
