We just came back from seeing the tunnels, both shows were very well presented, lasting about 50 minutes per tour. Best to arrive a few minutes early and to reserve as they only take about 15 people per tour. We had booked ahead on their website.
We did the passage of fortune first. You leave the ticket area and go down the street a bit and then enter one of the buildings. I felt a little claustrophobic for the first part but it was hot that day and in the beginning, a bit cramped. Soon we moved on, and it was not that bad from then on in. It was shameful to see our treatment of Chinese immigrants during the end of the 1800's through to the 50's. The guide plays parts and there is an animated figure that he interacts with, he portrays someone hostile to the immigrants but not in a frightening manner, we, the tourists, played new Chinese immigrants.
The second tour, starting across the street from the ticket office, was about bootleggers. It was lighthearted and more of a skit or play. We were the bootleggers and we were visiting Fannie's place and then she left and we were then led around by one of Capone's men. They both played their parts brilliantly. The man was especially good with his Chicago accent and comedic timing.
Both tours end in a stairway that leads up to the ticket office.
My children are 13, 15, and 17 and along with my husband and myself, we thoroughly enjoyed our tours and learned a good bit along the way.
