I came to Campeche with my family (me (27), my sister (25) and our parents) on a tour of the Yucatan. We didn't book any hotel before we came, and just figured we'd look around for something available once we got there. After stopping at the Hacienda Puerta Campeche (way too expensive) and the Del Mar Hotel (run down and overpriced for what you get), we stopped by the Francis Drake.
It looked very nice, albeit small, and we were shocked to learn that they were only going to charge us USD $60 per room. They showed us the rooms that were available and we were sold. One of them was a suite with a separate living room! It also had a little mini-balcony with french doors overlooking the street. The other room looked really different, but was also nice. It had dark wood bed and trim, and a dome ceiling that if I recall, had a blue sky with clouds painted on it.. somewhat tastefully done. Overall, the hotel had a European or French feel to it, although I've never been to europe, heh. Also, I believe you're allowed to smoke anywhere in Mexico, and this was the only hotel we stayed at that actually smelled like smoke in the hallway. I think it was fresh smoke though, not an old smell. The floors were marble so there was nothing for it to soak into.
I should note that the day we arrived was Christmas eve, and we weren't really sure what to do with ourselves since most things would be closing early. We wanted to have a nice Christmas eve dinner, so we stopped by the small hotel restaurant to see what they'd offer. They said they could make us something nice, so we put on our best outfits and went to the restaurant. We were the only ones eating there, and the waitstaff was super nice even though they would have had the night off if it weren't for us, and they made us a beautiful dinner. They were completely friendly and accomodating even though our spanish was horrible and I needed vegetarian food. Unfortunately, I'd say the ingredients weren't the best around (my mom was sure that the gravy for her chicken cordon bleu was made out of canned cream of mushroom soup), but the presentation was lovely (see my photos). We left feeling great.
The bed was comfortable, although I guess in Mexico, Christmas eve is a huge party night (duh). People were lighting off firecrackers in the street below our window until around 2am. Hey, wish my family whooped it up on Christmas like that! The location is walking distance to the zocalo and many historic landmarks. I walked around all Christmas morning taking photos. The town square had a huge xmas tree and everyone was out walking around on Christmas eve.
We were only there for 1 night, but if I ever go back to Campeche, I'd definitely stay there again. Great rooms, staff, location and definitely worth the very low cost.
