My six-day visit to Stapleton's Chantry was an incredibly lovely, memorable experience. I stayed in the spacious Blue Room, with its views to the front and back, its large desk, and its comfy bed. Folded on the bed was a sumptuous terrycloth bathrobe -- a most welcoming surprise. A colleague stayed in the charming Green Room. We shared the bathroom, with its modern shower, lush towels and luxurious bathtub. Family mementos, photographs, little handmade animals and hand-painted cups were just some of the things that brought a feeling of homey cosiness to the place.
Breakfast was to die for! We had fresh fruits and smoothies, yoghurt and juices, cereals and breads, porridge and fresh organic eggs, choices of meat, fish and vegetarian sausage, and much more, including delicious coffee.
Our hostess and host were very kind, accommodating and cheerful. They treated all their guests with thoughtful consideration and a sense of humour.
Stapleton's Chantry is in a lovely area near Wallingford, southeast of Oxford. Early spring flowers were in bloom, songbirds thrilled to the occasional sunshine, and a pair of mallards swam, fed, and played together on the pond. The nearby Red Lion pub offered a range of food and drink, including luscious homemade soups, several vegetarian entrees, and locally brewed beer.
I would return in a heartbeat.
