Based on the positive reviews of my critical foodie friends I made the trek here from Spokane - about a 40 mile round trip. This little restaurant can easily be missed. They do not advertise. They have no glitz whatsover. And yet...there is an incredible demand. I arrived exactly at 11 AM and was greeted warmly. The place is immaculate. Everything clean, shiny, and no nonsense cafe like sparse. Almost every single table had a reserve sign on it. The owner, Paul advised me to always call ahead for lunch by 10 AM to reserve a table. He found a table for me because after the reserved seats everything is first come first serve!
While Paul showed me the menu he asked me "What kind of meat you like? I fix the best for you!" I told him I really liked vegetables and tofu and he exclaimed "Oh I will fix the best and you will be happy!" Then I did order some dumplings too. And very quickly the food was prepared. Paul sort of hops around chatting from one table to another. By 11:20 the place was pretty full. I was amazed at the clientele. The patrons looked like a combination of suits, laborers, grizzled faces and fancy shoes. They were all regulars and their food was served as soon as they sat down. Each person had a reserved table and pre-ordered food that was beautifully and quickly prepared. Paul hopped about chatting real estate, stocks, mechanics, computers, construction and plumbing. I am not kidding you. I heard snatches of each conversation and he seems totally versatile in each venue.
This place is a real hideaway gem. It is totally word of mouth. They are only opened for lunch 11-1 and those hours can change as they take vacations and sometimes don't work on Saturday. Apparently supper is less rushed and the reservations are not needed.
My food was perfect. The dumplings really had a home made flavor and they were absolutely not purchased pre-made! The tofu he proudly told me came all the way from British Columbia as it had to be "very special for me!". It was prepared with a kind of crisp peppery sauce and served with many vegetables and Paul's favorite sauces. He excitedly showed me what menu items he would order next time for me. The portions are generous and even though I am a big greed eater I filled three take out containers with my leftovers. My total bill was $19.00 not including tip. So this is not a cheapo place but the value is more than the price of the food. Worth every bite.
I told his wife, the chef, thank you and she smiled and seemed pleased. I do believe their daughter also works there and they all seem intent on serving and doing fine work and yet having a good time. This kind of positive attitude must infuse the food and patrons. It was a kind of happy energy work place with all kinds of people.
I really recommend this not only for the food but for anyone who is eager for a cultural glimpse of a Spokane Valley they might not otherwise believe exists.
