We stayed for a couple nights as a part of a Rocky Mountain vacation.
Normally, I would stay in Banff as it's closer to the tourist attractions in and around town. That being said, however, accommodations costs in Banff are higher than in Canmore... which is located just outside the boundaries of the National Park.
The check-in process was smooth and uneventful. I booked my stay via Priceline... but the price savings was probably only about $10-$20... I recall paying about $130 CDN including taxes.
There are two calibres of rooms. There are rooms with the "Sleep Number" beds... an attempt by the hotel to let you adjust the softness level of the beds. I'm sure these rooms were nice... however, having booked through Priceline, the hotels usually only give you the most basic room.
I found the carpets to be stained in quite a few places. Also, the bedding was only barely average. Nothing fancy whatsoever. From the hotels I have stayed at, I would suggest that the quality of the rooms would be a 2 to 3 star rating.
Although I was disappointed with the rooms, the restaurant on the main floor is excellent. The chef did an outstanding job on the taste and presentation of the meal. You should make advance reservations as this hotel gets a lot of travel groups coming in by the busload.
Stay at this hotel if you want to avoid the high prices of staying in the actual Banff townsite. The drive-time to Banff is mere minutes (less than 10 minutes). The location is good, the service is decent, the restaurant was really good... but the rooms left something to be desired.
Well... paying $130 CDN is sure nicer than paying $400 CDN to stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.... but then again.... you get what you pay for...
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Stephen
