We were contacted and told that we had won a free stay at the Banff Gate Mountain Lodge and Spa in Banff for 2 nights plus a $100 spa voucher at a spa nearby valued at over $600. We just had to pick up our voucher at their Edmonton office of a company Chateau World. When we showed up it turns out it was a timeshare presentation and we had to sit through the presentation along with 30 other people that had won the same prize. After enduring 3 hours of shawdy sales tactics, we got our free stay certificate and spa voucher. After trying for 8 months to book our prize stay, we finally were booked after threatening to go to the Better Business Bureau. When we arrived at the Banff Gate Mountain Lodge we were told that there was no more rooms and we were booked into the Canmore Inn into a motel room. After screaming at the front desk staff and threatening to go to the Better Business Bureau as we had 6 people in our party and a hotel room just would not do, they finally gave us the room we were promised. The room had cowwebs around the ceiling fixtures and there was very little hot water at the best of times. There was only one bathroom instead of two (the second one was unfinished) and the paper thin walls mean we could hear the people next door on both sides. On trip advisor the room rate is $649. Nobody there paid that price, an informal poll of the guests showed that some paid $99 for three nights and some were members of the timeshare. Most were not very happy with their accomodations. After enduring the dirty rooms, paper thin walls and cold water showers, we were told that we had to attend another 2 hour timeshare meeting or else our stay that we had won would not be free and we would have to pay $400 for two nights. I think nothing is for free and I regret ever falling for this fake prize ploy. I was very disapointed with the hotel and would never visit again.
