My wife and I stayed at the Delta Kananaskis for two nights on Feb 3rd and 4th directly after our wedding.

Our reservation was botched from the start. I booked the Anniversary package special ($357 CAN/night) for the first night and told the phone reservation agent that we would like to stay on in the suite for the second night ($219 CAN/night) but didn't require the spa package for the second day. When we arrived at the hotel we were booked for one night only. This was a shame as I had called three days in advance to confirm the booking.

During my advance call to the hotel I requested a bottle of champagne and snacks be waiting in our room prior to arrival. When we arrived at the hotel at 1.30 AM we found nothing in the room. I called the front desk and they did send up the night staff with a bottle of champagne and chocolates. The night staff was very friendly and efficient. I called the manager in the morning and she removed the charges for the champagne. While I was happy that the hotel acknowledged the error and refunded the charges I was disappointed at the oversight. After all, you only get married once and only get one opportunity to get it right on your wedding night.

My second problem with the hotel is that the spa is run independently from the hotel. When I called in advance to book our spa appointments we were told that we were not guaranteed a spot in the spa even though we had booked the anniversary package. The package includes two spa vouchers. In my mind, if the hotel is willing to accept my anniversary package booking they should reserve a spa booking at the same time.

Now that I have those two beefs out of the way I would like to say that the other elements of our stay were very positive. The suite was brilliant and the hot tub very relaxing. The food at all our meals was plentiful and well presented. The bell staff was very courteous. The rooms are a bit dated, but kept in excellent condition. The on demand video system worked flawlessly and the selection of movies was both current and wide.

Our best times at the resort were taking walks on the vast pathway system and enjoying the excellent breakfasts.

My wife and I were there for a post wedding breather and only wanted to relax and have a couple of good meals. The hotel delivered in spades. Despite the problems with the hotel and spa reservation systems I would still recommend this property. Our overall impression was great. I would recommend this hotel to honeymooners as well as those looking for a weekend getaway.

I would like to add one final note. The phone charges at this hotel are extortion. I did use the hotel phone to dial long distance and made two calls to Calgary - total time - 17 minutes for which I was charged 35 dollars. Buyer beware.

Having stayed here in Summer 2002 and adored it, we decided to add two nights here onto our recent ski holiday so that we had easy access to the ski area at Nakiska. We booked into a Signature Club room (separate building to the main lodge). Room was beautiful and clean. Complimentary breakfast from 7 am (although it wasn't set out at 7.15 am on the Saturday morning when we left for the airport!) Hors deouvres from 4 pm.

Normally an adult only environment, one thing to watch if you are a couple that wants a bit of peace and quiet, is because it was a holiday weekend the Signature Club allowed children in there (which wouldn't be so bad if adults controlled them, but whilst we were there a table top was smashed as children ran riot)!

Dinner both nights at the Fireweed Grill absolutely brilliant. Staff as always courteous. Would have no hesitation in returning.

“odd mixture”

Delta Kananskis Lodge is an odd mixture. On the (very) positive side, by European standards, the rooms are huge and good value, the views from those rooms that have views are fantastic, and the isolation (which I loved) reminds you why the G8 summit was here - as does the slab of concrete in the grounds allegedly the site for a rocket launcher. .On the less positive side, the 'village' has all the charm of a 1950s holiday camp. The restaurants are as cavernous and noisy as school canteens, and the staff, though willing and charming are largely citizens of the world with something other than helping to run a hotel in mind., If you are here for a romantic time a deux, order supper in your room, enjoy the rockies, and remind yourself that unlike your boarding school, which this may ressemble in some respects, those groups of kids in the hotel are having a great time, You might too, but brief yourself well first on whether this is the right place for you.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights of our honeymoon and really enjoyed the seclusion and quiet. It was a very quiet time of year although it seemed that there was a conference on. Some of the shops were closed, which was a little disapointing but there were other amenities that we enjoyed including the gym, spa, and pool/outdoor hot tub. It was perfect to go soak after a morning of hiking. To be honest, now a month and a half later, I don't remember too much else about the hotel, so it couldn't have been too impressive nor disapointing. Really, the highlight for us was to go outdoors walking through the paths.

    • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — Seems to be lots of good biking, although we didn't have ours with us.

I was at the Delta recently for a work conference. I would describe the hotel as very nice, but not extremely nice. The hotel has nice rooms, good places to eat and a nice pool and spa area. the only problem or advantage (depending on how you look at it) is that is is very Secluded. I would like to go back with my wife for a getaway sometime.
