“Very Disappointing and not at all Five Staf”

Tauca Lea Resort & Spa

The property is very disappointing for the $300 a night price range. Front desk staff disorganized. No feather pillows...at $300 a night (single) you'd think they'd have them on hand, as does competing Long Beach Lodge, Wickanannish Inn etc.
Faces a boat basin, so at 5 am or so, the commercial fishing boats and sport boats fire up and wake you up as they head out. It doesn't face the big surf as does Long Beach Lodge or Wickananninish or Pacific Sands, rather a sort of so-so little basin and harbour, which is a very commercial harbour. Float planes take off in between boat departures, so it's not serene. Walls are pretty much pictureless, and the place feels very sterile and not warm, compared with other area high=end resorts. They clearly are taking advantage of the fact that there's limited accommodation at thepeak and have jacked up rates well beyond the decor, amenities, staff ability and location.
I'd pass.

Our family of four, including adult daughter and teen-aged son,
spent three nights at Tauca Lea. We were in a corner suite with an inlet view and were very impressed with our accomodations. It's true that the jetted tubs on the deck were more "public" than we had hoped, but after a day of hiking it was wonderful to soak and have a glass of wine, listening to the bark of seals and watching eagles fly from tree to tree.
Ucluelet is fairly remote and we realized it must be very difficult to provide resort amenities when you're miles and hours from any major city. The on-site restaurant was fabulous, but the menu was limited and rather expensive. Dining out choices are limited in the area, but our two bedroom suite had a kitchen so we were able to pack lunches for our hikes. Breakfast is included in room cost and consisted of fresh juices, fruit, cereals, muffins, etc. The girls were happy but the guys wished for heartier fare before another day of hiking.
The fireplace in the room was impossible for us to figure out, but the picture window onto the inlet provided the same sense of mesmerizing calm.
The staff was friendly and helpful and recommended different hikes for us to try. I'd highly recommend this location!

We stayed there with another couple and after going over all the possibilities we chose this place. A hot tub was in our criteria as well as the price being reasonable. Oh not to mention the lure of a fireplace and a spa there.

We got there after we hit the save on in nanaimo. So we got in a bit late, eventually we got the keys to our abode and found our room. Yep, looked like a condo complex as opposed to a resort. We hoped to not get lost as every building looked the same.

The suite itself was quite nice in a sparse IKEA furnished way. Everything was IKEA so there was really no sense of uniqueness to the decore. Our bed was cosy and I liked the fact they used duvets instead of the icky vellux blankets and sheets one usually gets at motels.

So to get to the good - I think I said it - not bad but not too thrilling.

For the downsides - well, teh breakfast we almost didn't get as we discovered we had to be at the restaurant by 10am and by some fast talking by our friend, he managed to score some baked goods to bring back to our suite.

We got the harbour view - not that nice and not that nice from our balcony. Speaking of balcony, recall the jetted tub? Yes a big bathtub in full view - you have to wear a bathing suit (weird I tell you) and the water got cold pretty fast - I'd rather soak in the tub in the bathroom.

We walked around the area and the gravel everywhere was pretty nnoisy (expecially at night when people were coming and going in cars). We were only there for the weekend so we didn't quite get the full effect of no daily cleaning service. The restaurant seemed pretty pricey and teh vegetarain options were lacking. We did cook in our kitchen - always always always bring a decent knife from home with you - these ones were pathetic. Not too much for cooking utensils and plates - like camping!

In all, not a very romantic place to spend hard earned dollars. We should have picked the other place.

Very disappointing at best. We found the hotel website to be very misleading, especially the room picture. It is a very long drive from the Nanaimo Terminal but that was no major problem and we did know this. We had friends fly all the way out from Ontario for their 20th anniversary to celebrate with us and we wanted to make it special. We booked a two bedroom "delux" suite (as seen in the picture on the website with windows on both sides in the living room and a large deck with jet tub).....with the statement "every suite has a waterfront view)....what is misleading is that the water view is of the marina.......fine if you only want to look at boats and not the ocean. Or, the inlet.........in other words, don't assume that this Western most location on the coast of Vancouver Island is going to view the ocean......just the marina. Also the pictured room on the website belongs to the owner and was "unavailable"....the two bedroom suite was just ok, nice furniture but overall quite small, especially for four adults. Also, with both of us paying over 300.00 a night in (storm season rates)....only one bedroom is worth even close to that price. We let our friends have the master bedroom even though we each paid the same......the second bedroom has it's own bathroom but no hairdryer (like two hairdryers would be too costly?) and the bedroom was very small and they couldn't even splurge for a clock.......let alone an empty wall where a missing tv cabinet would obviously be placed since there is a cable jack........not a phone either.........both not necessary but both expected for this price and boasts of "superior luxury". Also, don't get hungry before 5:30 if you wish to stay in the resort....the ONE restaurant does not open until 5:30 except for a sparse and very ordinary continental breakfast is served. Also, for this inflated price....you will need to ask for an iron and board......nope....not included and if you hope to bring your laptop due the website also misleading by saying "data ports plus hot spots in lobby".....well,may be clear to some but we found also to lead one to think the room would have internet access as even motel 6's have in the room connections nowadays.......nope! Nice people and beautiful scenic area but way too much money for what you get......you can find much better closer to major cities and rent a car for the difference........I have had more luxury as they claim for much less price. The price would have been a bargin if the rooms would have looked like what they promote......the baloncy jet tub is on a small cramped deck.....no where on the website do you see such a tiny deck......hope you don't want to sit out there and enjoy the boat view or the empty inlet view because you need to bring a chair.....no chairs either.......the tub.......a two man sized bathtub really with jets....but don't try to fill it even half full as you will run out of hot water......then when you go inside to warm up in your shower.....nope........no more hot water until hours later.......pay more.......or stick to major chain hotel......come on Tauca Lea owner......spends some of our bucks and buy a hair dryer and clock for the second bedroom, fix the doors so they actually shut and lock without jamming your shoulder....and pay more next time for a tile setter.......you can't open some bathroom doors unless you push them over the uneven tiles, especially the one in the kitchen you will stub your toe on it's so much higher.......sorry, very very disappointing

My wife and I stayed at Tauca Lea Spa Resort for 3 days (18-21 July) in mid-summer. We both felt that it was absolutely terrific. We had a one room suite with two person jetted tub on the balcony over looking the harbour. Personally we enjoyed the comings and goings in the harbour though clearly it wouldn't to everyone's taste. Having said that we arrived a day earlier than our booking but were still accomodated. When we were there there was a great view on the inlet side of Tauca Lea of Bald Eagles sitting on a nest so we could understand why visitors would prefer that side of the Resort.

Our suite was a very tastefully fitted out (IKEA fittings) light filled space. It was great to be able to self cater. We ate in the Boat Basin restaurant on our first night. It was a little pricey but the food was very good. On our second night we ate a meal in the apartment of in laws staying in the next unit. We had no problems with the kitchen or supply of utensils and we enjoyed a fine meal in very pleasant circumstances. On our third evening we ate out at the Tofino Botanic Gardens. We had a great meal that was good value for money. While at Tauca Lea we were so relaxed that we never underwent any of the spa treatments as there was no need. My only quibble with the place was that they only provided a continental breakfast. I would have preferred if hot food had also been available. Nevertheless, we a great time at Tauca Lea and would go back in a heart beat. Having previously posted about Poet's Cove at which we also stayed during our trip I would say that Tauca Lea is streets ahead in terms of service and VFM.
